What, like, when they're talking and you, like, just want to tune and, like, think about something else like what am I going to have for dinner?
Once or Twice, even.
I love my daughter to bits but she uses "you know" in almost every sentence. I try to ignore it but find it very wearing.
Also kind of and sort of. Exasperating!
‘Like’ all the way through a sentence and basically this, basically that!
Question Author
noo, now you've reminded me of basically
yeah I react spontaneously like, when I read 'foo!' on AB
I dont even discount the first hundred, like

why - it gives them time to think so it doesnt sound like a complete dogs dinner - when it comes out of their mouths
Question Author
doesn't work does it pp?
I've been told I use 'so...' and 'well...' at the beginning of my sentences when I speak........a lot!
pp's right, it's just one of those things people say while they work out the next few words. People with university degrees say "basically" or "at this point in time" for the same reason. We can't all have the gift of the gab like them on telly.
Question Author
^ it's only 'them on telly' that i hear doing it . . .
My son is guilty of basically. It so annoys me. And he says really all the time, but in a disbelieving tone!
I watch quite a lot of sports on tv and cannot for the life in me fathom why, when being asked a question, many sportsmen and women begin their answers with, "Yeah, no......"
Not picking on Harry, just using this as an example.

Australian sportsmen usually begin their replies with 'Look......'
Ken, how many times does he say er and erm?
Absolutely,
aelmpvw, most people on telly are pretty fluent, it's one of the things they get hired for. Not necessarily the same for contestants on quiz shows or Influencers being interviewed, of course. But if you've caught David Attenborough doing it...
I think 'like' is too short a word to be used to fill a gap while you think. It's much used to form a verb "to be lie" means "to say".
As in, "I'm like, 'Whaa!", and she's like "Yeeeeeah!"
'to be like'! Like, sorry!
Don't watch Love Island then, they use 'like' all the time and also 'do you know what I mean' !! Can't string a proper sentence together for love nor money ...
