22.31, right on cue . John Bull has joined the thread.
Yes, I am proud of Britain. I think we're bloody brilliant! For those of you who aren't British but nevertheless criticise the country you've chosen to call home, this question doesn't apply to you, but if you're unhappy with your move there's a short answer to that. Do the other thing!

To those ex-pats who've already made their choice, stay away, and I wish you bon chance. You're going to need it!

Come the revolution eh Tora?

Don't tell him Pike!

Of course. Very.
Are you going to bring up slavery as well, piggynose.
No one is responsible for their ancestors did or didn't do.
then can anyone take pride in what their ancestors have done?
"Britannia Rule the waves" but they can't stop the rubber boats coming over the Channel.
The tone of responses appears to be offering only one position as acceptable - you need to be 'proud' of Britain, and if you are not 'proud' then you really don't deserve to live here.

I find that far to simplistic, not to say jingoistic as an attitude - I don't feel 'proud' of this country, which is not at all to suggest that I hold it in contempt, or don't support its values.

Over-simplification is never a good position from which to start a debate.

Yes.
I was proud of my grandad who lost both legs in a war.

Yes, bednobs. I can. Very much so.
Yes, bednobs. I can. Very much so.

So can I.
This thread, and the one following, feels like someone trying to start an argument for no good reason.
And it also feels mildly threatening
I don’t think it’s anything to do with news certainly
ich - // This thread, and the one following, feels like someone trying to start an argument for no good reason.

The concept of a threat is a matter of perception - since clearly no harm can come to you via an internet forum, if you are uncomfortable, the simplest solution is to absent yourself, wouldn't you agree?
That is rather a bizarre response given I’m largely agreeing with you.
Maybe “sinister” would be a better word.
This is just innocent AB nonsense of course but in the world in general Internet forums can actually be quite threatening
And it also feels mildly threatening

i just find it a very contrary position to say you are proud of britain (where you live) but not proud of Europe (where you live)
And also you can say you cant take any responsibility for the awful acts of your ancestors, while at the same time taking pride in the good things
Internet forums can actually be quite threatening

bednobs: "i just find it a very contrary position to say you are proud of britain (where you live) but not proud of Europe (where you live) " - how do you work that out, I love Europe, I am very proud of Europe. Not sure where you got that Idea from.
