Some sections of four motorways are going to be cut to 60 mph to reduce pollution - surely it would be better to cut it to 60 across the board rather than just in small sections. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-54130862

If you slow down parts of a Motorway you usually end up with it becoing staionary at some point during heavy traffic. Pollution then increases.

This is more about control again all this obsessive Government seems to want.

Boris thinks he is like Churchill, more like Adolf to me.
21.30 Deskdiary stop talking like a Turpin, You know or Ought to know that . Hell's Angel Riders Doing a ton down the motorway are a danger to the public and The Ozone Layer.
What are the usual maximum speeds, the in the UK? In Ontario, the usual maximums are: highways, 60mph; in town, 22mph.
"maximum speeds in the UK" that should read.

Can anybody decipher this nonsense for me? I have literally no idea what he's saying.
It's a continuation of the tax on speed. Those that can pay it will carry on as normal. Those that can't will slow down a bit.

He / she has been watching 'Easy Rider'. Lucky to get a ton out of any of those mobile oil slicks back in the 60's.
Hi, I'd be interested in an answer to my question at 2244, thanks.
70 mph on the motorways and usually 30 mph in built up areas ( sometimes 20 mph in areas around schools ), sanmac. Although on 'Intelligent' stretches of motorway the overhead gantries tell you what the maxium speed is ie 20, 30, 40 ect is depending on whats happening ie accident, fog, roadworks ect.
Thanks, tonyav, so not that much difference really. Around most school areas the maximum is 15mph. The cops are somewhat lenient on high-way speeds; however, if you are caught speeding in a school area you are in deep trouble.

Thats the way it should be imo , sanmac.
Sometimes 20 mph in areas around any road the authorities think they fancy it. Best of all to keep switching from 30 to 20 to 30 to 20... because that allows a greater opportunity to fine drivers. Plus the added advantage of preventing reasonable progress to a destination. A major opportunity to make things worse in society. Oh the joy of getting into power and controlling the masses for one's own ego boost.
D/D @22.46, I was comparing you to The famous Highway mans first name , as in Turpin.

add to the “what’s happening” list, local authority meeting its emission targets - never mind the trials announced yesterday, the gantry signs on some motorways are already left switched on all day regardless of traffic conditions. regular areas for this are M1 woodhall services to the M18, and M42 from M6 to M40.
dropping 10mph won't make any difference. Loony tunes.
@0907
Would that be Betty?
yes mush, in isolation going slower (up to a point) uses less energy overall and thus less pollution but that's not the only factor here. Longer time on the roads means more hold ups and longer times on the roads as a vicious circle. Then there is the overall effect of all that time lost etc. Variable speed limits on the M25 have shown some success at managing throughput, we should look into that more.

yes, but the controlling agencies need to be better at monitoring. they are rubbish at turning the signs off once congestion has cleared.
