Do the players even know why they are 'taking the knee'?

to avoid being labelled a racist
to avoid sitting on the subs bench
to not put their livelihood in jeopardy.

They are being press-ganged.

It's all going well for BLM... nobody appears to be standing up to their agenda.
No chance of it being just a simple mark of respect for their black team-mates then, royfromaus. Not in your cynical world.
Realist world.

Do you seriously think every footballer is supportive of a Marxist movement?
I should imagine not, but perhaps they are able to appreciate the nuance of supporting the anti-racism element of the campaign without endorsing the wider (and, it is important to note, far from universal) aims.

Incidentally, focusing on Socialism/Marxism seems to be a surprisingly popular line of attack when you want to distract from the main issue.
They're not kneeling in support of a Marxist movement, roy. They are kneeling in support of the message that Black lives are not cannon fodder for white police. True, there is a very unwelcome element that appears to have taken over the movement, but they are the minority. I've told on here a few times of the Anti Poll Tax protests I attended and of how they were hijacked by subversives whose only aim was to clash with the police and cause as much mayhem as they possibly could. That's how most peaceful protests end in violence.
It was founded by Marxists and the leaders in the UK are Marxists.

Coincidence?
True, there is a very unwelcome element that appears to have taken over the movement,

Not true.
Footballers seem to be exempt from the distancing rule as well as their spitting. They set a poor example when the rest of the country
have to comply to restrictions.
Football governing bodies haven't done very well in getting rid of racism amongst their fans so when they've got their fans back and start abusing a black footballer, what on earth are these footballers going to do?
There was talk of a team walking off in support of a team-mate and governing bodies saying they'd be penalised, what total hypocrisy.
I think the whole thing stinks.
It's ridiculous that there is a manhunt for someone who hasn't broadcast any racism and thinks his life matters.

I fear this is just the beginning. Every action creates an equal and opposite reaction.
Your fears are well founded.
Lost for words...

I'm sure nobody would have flickered an eyelid if a player said

''I will take a knee in support of the black people's struggle with police brutality but I won't sport the slogan of a political movement on my shirt''

Yep...I'm sure he would be fully supported.

roy: "It's ridiculous that there is a manhunt for someone who hasn't broadcast any racism and thinks his life matters. " - man hunt, why? no offence has been committed, has it?
//would the plane even dare fly over Villa Park, tony - after all, it is the 'Black Country//

Erm - Villa park is not in the Black Country
TTT, why are you asking me why the hunt is on to find the perpetrator of the stunt?
They do know who was responsible:-

//. Burnley local Jake Hepple has claimed responsibility for the stunt.
I aware of that.
Question Author
roy, it was an attempt at allying myself to your view. Probably doesn't come across well in type.
