>> So "her modern Joan of Arc schtick" was not a criticism?
> Of her personally? No

OK, some people may see things in black and white, which is bad enough, but if you're going to argue that black is white, there's not a lot of point discussing it further ...
Mozz - // Andy, she's bought her cause to the attention of tens of millions. That's not a bad impact for a young woman in her position. //

That's just it, she is not in 'a position'!

She is a mass media novelty, like cute kitten videos.

What we must always be aware of, is that someone watching or listening to something on the internet does not equate with understanding or agreeing with it. If it did, millions more people think a kitten is cuter than Ms. Thornburg, because millions more have looked at it.

This is the illusion that the Internet and Social Media create - fads and fashions are not real generators of change in society.

// If no governments have acted yet, that' not her fault. If a third ofhe people who have heard her agree with her, then the voice gets louder to the point that change will have to come. //

A nice concept, but again, making noise is not the same as making change.

Governments around the world have vast personal and political investments in energy companies, and there is not the will or the intention to change any time soon. Maybe in generations to come people will look back and assess Ms. Thornburg's impact, but to assume that she is suddenly the voice of common sense and instant change is naïve in the extreme.

//In a melodramatic term, she's fanning the flames that could lead to a revolution in green awareness. //

It could, but that will only happen if governments are convinced there is something in it for them in terms of votes and power.

That will not come from being lectured by a teenager.
Ellipsis - // OK, some people may see things in black and white, which is bad enough, but if you're going to argue that black is white, there's not a lot of point discussing it further ... //

Seeing things in black and white is the prerogative of the child and the adolescent, bot the adults who run the world, so it's not 'bad' for them to do it, merely to assume that adults will do the same if someone says it and enough people talk about it on the Internet.

As for arguing that 'black is white' - you have your interpretation of what I said, I think you are incorrect, if you wish to discontinue debating with me, that is your choice.
i didn't know she had aspergers.. makes you wonder quite who looks after her..
Emmie...that makes it sound as if she is incapable of thinking for herself, or of being independent.
emmie - // makes you wonder quite who looks after her.. //

Actually, it makes me angry that clearly people are NOT looking after her.
pastafreak - // Emmie...that makes it sound as if she is incapable of thinking for herself, or of being independent. //

The two are mutually exclusive.

Can she think for herself?

Absolutely.

Can she travel around the world independently - can she even feed clothe and shelter herself independently?

Clearly not - she is a child.
Most people with Asperger's are perfectly capable to look after themselves.
at 16, someone should be taking care of her. she is still a child after all, irrespective of the aspergers.
I think the whole climate change thing is her Aspergers 'fixation' If it wasn't climate change it would be something else. We shouldn't be indulging her quite so much.
ummmm - // Most people with Asperger's are perfectly capable to look after themselves. //

That's not my point.

My point is, we are not talking her ability to feed and dress herself, we are talking her travelling around the world lecturing politicians - no sixteen year old does that without adult support.
I wasn't answering you, Andy.
Emmie....If someone is old enough to go out and get full time employment...they can look after themselves. She's not a baby.
237SJ - // I think the whole climate change thing is her Aspergers 'fixation' If it wasn't climate change it would be something else. We shouldn't be indulging her quite so much. //

I'm inclined to agree.

As I see it, her parents, activist both, know that they would not create the mass appeal, and the illusion of effect, themselves, but the novelty of a teenager with mental health issues will, so they have manipulated her into delivering their message for them.

They should be ashamed of themselves, but as self-righteous individuals with too much time on their hands, that is not a likely scenario.
ummmm - // I wasn't answering you, Andy. //

That does not negate the truth in what I posted.
would you let your 16 year travel around the world by catamaran wasn't it, when she sailed across to the States. I am not sure i would like it at all.
she may not be a baby, but feel that she is being manipulated.
I agree with some of your points, Andy, I just disagree that her autism should in any way been blamed.
It should not be blamed of course, but the fixation may be in part due to it, which makes her parents' exploitation of her even more repugnant than it is already.
What 16 year old child should be subjected to being seen as a hate figure around the world? I suppose any publicity for mummy's recent book launch must be good publicity. As a parent I would of taken my daughter out of the spotlight and media interest when a effigy of the kid was shown in the press of her hanging from a bridge in Italy.
That must be distressing and unsettling for any child.

Yes, I would have let my 16 year old cross the Atlantic in the way Greta did, Emmie. He was sensible enough and competent enough. Depends on the 16 year old.
