I am happy to accept the notion that capital punishment is society's revenge, which is why I don't agree with it, because I think it is barbaric.

But the notion that capital punishment is a deterrent is simply facile.

I doubt there is a murderer who has ever walked who seriously contemplated the potential result of the action of murder, and factored that contemplation into his or her thought processes in advance of the act.

Criminal human nature does not assess risks and consequences - if it did, crime would stop overnight.

No criminal ever thinks they will be caught or punished, if they did, they would not commit the crime in the first place.

The fact is, if someone commits a crime and is subject to capital punishment, then obviously they won't do it again. That is the solution. Also we don't need to pay to keep them alive.

Some would say lethal injection or even a bullet to the head is more humane than leaving someone in a cell for the rest of their sorry life.
