I am sure they would have to apply.

There are smaller EU members in terms of land, population or GDP, so I would imagine it would be a formality, and fast-tracked.
The EU would welcome them in - just to spite rUK.
There was speculation that Spain might veto Scotland joining because it does not want to encourage its own separatists. But the Spanish Government clarified that it would support a Scottish bid.
allowing Scotland into the EU would set a precedent that neither France nor Spain would welcome, because of the ongoing situation with their potential breakaway children, in particular Catalunya.
It has to get its GDP deficit down to 3% before it can become a member. It’s currently 7% so no mean feat. Especially without all the cash flowing North.
She's always claiming it'd be easy to get back in, were they out of the United Kingdom. Amazing anyone, including the media, takes her seriously enough to listen these days.
Mushroom
Spain will not veto Scotland if it legally accedes the Union.

TBH that's least of their problems, what will they do about the border for a start?
& don't forget Scotland's access to (whatever's left of) N Sea oil & the northern fishing grounds.
delusion on a grand scale
The odds for an independent Scotland being able to join the EU smoothly must surely be better than the UK having a full trading deal with the EU within six months of Brexit.
Scotland will not be allowed in, the Eu wouldn't want two border problems.
what?

I like the "is this more delusion?" coming from 3T
I was on the point of posting - yes he is completely out of it as usual.....

yes Sturgeon has asked that and been told that she has to become an independent nation and then apply as such

has she taken it in ? well this is a funny ( funny peculiar) election - whenever the big hitters have mentioned trust truth and confidence
audiences have laughed .....
All academic. Scotland is not going to leave the UK. Most Scots know which side their bread is buttered.
she has to become an independent nation and then be rejected as such
As I said - SNP policy: fail to get Independence, screw rUK for every penny you can get.
If Scotland does leave the UK, will our National Health Service have more money to go round in the remaining parts of the UK? They will not want to remain in any of our institutions surely.
vulcan - why should Scotland leaving the UK create a border problem? There is only a problem on Ireland because of the Good Friday Agreement; Scotland leave the UK we install a border.
And you don't consider that a problem ? Maybe it's an opportunity then.
They don't want any more nett receivers. They have too many bankrupt states already. They would be far worse off Independent. No fiscal alignment with the rest of the U.K., no Barnet formulae.........
