the alternative doesn't bear thinking about to be honest.

What happens I wonder if there is a second EU referendum, one on the deal, and the government backs the losing horse?
I would really hope that someone somewhere would have learned a lesson about calling a referendum you don't expect to lose....
With overwhelming public support it would seem for such a referendum it might be hard to resist.
A lot might depend on what the "no" option was
The problem with the last referendum was that no one actually knew what one of the options really entailed (including its opponents) - like buying a brand new Brexit House before you've seen the plans as I've seen it described.
A sensible goverment might hedge its bets next time ...
no more referendums please one was certainly enough..
If there is public support, I hope nobody listens. If we had a result that contradicted the first one we would end up in a serious constitutional crisis and witness serious civil unrest.
But it wouldn't contradict the second because it would be a different choice.
And would be the will of the people :-)
I really don't see people rioting over our membership or otherwise of the EU :-)
The question in any case I was interested in was would the government be confident enough to support the "deal" side" in such a scenario or decide not to take sides. Impossible really to say now tho I agree.

Theresa May has been warned by some of her Mps, that she is Dangerously close to a vote of no confidence, bet Moggie and Bojo are jumping up and down.
The Conservatives are divided over Europe, but that is nothing new. The two factions are in open warfare, and candidates are jockeying to take over from May when she gets the chop. It is all very damaging and messy.

They are in Government at this very crucial time in our history, and they are putting self interest before the country.
I believe that there is no serious attempt to dethrone the PM until the outline of a deal is sorted.
David Cameron's idea was that a Brexit referendum would lance the boil of the EU question in the Tory party or the country for a generation or more, and put the fruitcakes and the swivellers to bed finally.
That worked ...
I too believe she is safe until the Autumn.

But it is like watching a car crash in slow motion.
no chance of a new PM for months, but nothing to stop the likes of Boris doing a little trial backstabbing in the meantime just to weaken May, a bit like those picadors who stick pins in the bull before the matador comes on.

That it also weakens the country is neither here nor there from their point of view.
//is the conservative party in turmoil?//
probably no more or less than her majesty's loyal opposition....

With Thersa the Appeaser and Arch Remoaner Stabber Hammond it is hardly surprising is it?

However the Labour Party doesnt seem to be that tranquil either and as for UKIP and the Lib-Dems .....
May will stay for the foreseeable future. There are no big beasts to challenge her apart from Boris and Rees-Mogg. Whilst I admire the latter he would be a no-no to the country at large. Boris just has to bide his time.
