I spent 6 weeks in this prison 20 years ago, at the end of an 8 month sentence. It felt like 6 years at the time. It was just as bad (perhaps even worse) then.
Just curious as to how some people...here and elsewhere... continually see prison as a holiday camp? Not argueing about the rights and wrongs of prisoners or their conditions, just curious as to how people can still equate going to jail with a holiday in Butlins?

Squad
//My experience is limited to three, Wakefield Jail, Walton Prison and the Mental hospital just outside Maghull,//
When I was in Walton, we had a prison doctor that we called the ventriloquist, his lips hardly moved when he talked, a bit unnerving. He was a right miserable old sod as well. Wasn't you was it?

//I actually don't care very much that it's bloody awful in prison//
Didnt read the bit in my post then that said

The last two hangings in Britain took place at Walton and Strangeways in August 1964.
Nailit...LOL....how did you guess?

Lol @ Nails for that.....and Sqad's good natured response. :))
I see that 'sod' has been removed from the AB filter list.
nailit....I did a locum to earn some cash whilst i was doing my surgery exams and doing a couple of jail sessions was a part of my job.
I couldn't wait to get out and the medication had to be consumed in the medical cell, as they were not permitted to take it later for fear of hoarding.
Haha Sqad.....I can see your lips moving. :))

Neither could I strangely enough...
Theo Dalrymple was a visiting prison doctor (and general polymath) who used to write about it regularly in The Spectator to an astonished readership, I being one of them;

So can I Togo, must have been a different doctor. Don't owe him a pint after all ;-)
///Nailit, I will believe you any day. The media cannot be trusted to report the truth//
Thanks SharonA. Some muppets on here believe anything! ///

I can't speak for the 'muppets on here' but I don't believe in the Sun's report that you entered as your proof.
How sad for prisoners in Maghull. Was it a tin nissen hut lacking heating where icicles from roof to floor barred the exit? Where coal was purloined from railways by kids for indoor stove. Broth & bread was daily diet. Wellys against freezing snow across 2mile walk of ploughed fields to school & bashed by peers becoz no adult protection. Treated like scum by locals coz we lived in army camp & dad was serving abroad. We did scrump & caning ended our crimes.
tambo....LOL.
No it was modern, clean, snooker tables TV and all the mod cons......except of course freedom and dignity.

Well AOG its not just The Sun is it? This an HM Inspectorate report that has been featured on the news. In additition Ive been there and that is exactly what it is like. If you feel the need to carry on believing Daily Mail hype that our jails are holiday camps then please be free to do so.
Freedom & dignity .... pah for a soldiers 8y dter!
Nailit youre well read but not working. Volunteer your time to helping others unable to read

I don't know why you brought the Daily Mail into this, but it was you, yourself that put "Some muppets on here believe anything!"

So why do you expect muppets or others on here to believe in you or the Sun?
Question Author
I'm not asking anyone to believe me or The Sun AOG. But are you saying that H M Inspectorate of prisons are wrong? And you may not believe me but Ive been there, You havnt.
