I spent 6 weeks in this prison 20 years ago, at the end of an 8 month sentence. It felt like 6 years at the time. It was just as bad (perhaps even worse) then.
Just curious as to how some people...here and elsewhere... continually see prison as a holiday camp? Not argueing about the rights and wrongs of prisoners or their conditions, just curious as to how people can still equate going to jail with a holiday in Butlins?

ignorance and prejudice maybe?
Question Author
Yep, that's definitely one reason jno.
Have you ever been to Butlins, nailit? :-)
Question Author
Many years ago NJ. I can see ur point ;-)
Its quite clearly not anything like a holiday Nailit, but those that think so are just being ignorant. The world is full of ignorant people.

The state of some of our prisons is disgraceful. I heard the person in charge of Liverpool being interviewed on the radio this morning, and the reason why this is so is complicated. But money is a major factor.
Holiday camp or not ... it's not something I lose sleep over.

If you can't do the ti ...............................you know the rest.

Mikey, having had first hand experience of this jail (not the Daily Mail hype) I can say that I honestly understand the high suicide rates in prison. In Liverpool (Walton) the screws were bullies to a man.
Prisons are full of the bad, the mad and the sad...
Ive said before that there are people in the nick that need treatment, not punishment.
Agree 100%, but you won't convince the ignorant of that fact. The know-alls.
Why has the governor not been sacked and someone more competent put in his place?
Question Author
JD, I can say, first hand, this is not an isolated incident. Regardless of the governor, this is what 21 century prisons are like. Far from the 'Butlins' of media myth.
I have never subscribed to the 'Holiday Camp' theory - I can understand why some people get cross at documentaries about the newer well kitted out establishments as they themselves are struggling to pay a heating bill etc - but what price freedom?

With the older prisons that have been left to rot it becomes a vicious circle, one broken window becomes a row of them and damage follows damage.

At the very least an attempt to smarten things up using the captive workforce they have there would be a start and may encourage inmates to take care of better surroundings.

I also agree there are many who should not be incarcerated and of course some who should be but aren't.
Things are on the turn, don't worry. £Squillions have just been spent on a brand spanking new state of the art nick in Wrexham. Berwyn I think. The prisoners love it, but the screws are all having nervous breakdowns and leaving. Compo claims are already in the pipeline.

Got a link Togo??
Question Author
Well thought out post Mamya...
Thank you, for the most part of my life I never had cause to give such things much thought, but a few years ago circumstances changed all that.

Now I try harder to understand.
Haha Nails.... just thought I would smuggle a bit of "spice" into your thread. :))
Full body search next visit then, hee hee.

A bit of spice without a link is a bit pointless tho Togo ;-)
