So what have they done wrong?
Where to begin. Where do they dispose of their sewage? Where do they dispose of their household rubbish? Where do they dispose of the rubbish they have been paid to collect?

Unless it’s criminal trespass (which it isn’t) their occupation of the land is purely a civil matter. It is notoriously difficult to evict somebody from private land and involves court orders having to be sought and actioned. The police play no part in this process and will only attend, if asked, to keep the peace when private bailiffs attend to carry out the writ (at a cost to the landowner). To understand this, Islay, imagine you owned a small field which you used from time to time. If travellers pitch up on it you will have to go to the Court, explain why you want them moved, obtain a writ of possession and then either serve it yourself and hope they obey it or pay bailiffs to serve it on your behalf. Fair?

They are happy to use (and abuse) every part of mainstream society that is useful to them (roads, fuel, telecoms, benefits etc etc).
What they *are* absolutely clear on is that they will never ever contribute anything whatsoever to the costs of providing this infrastructure.

Council owned land has a slightly different way of dealing with these things. Because it is 'public' land the councils are usually very cagey about getting rid.
It is also the case that if you can show willfull damage, i.e. Fences, chains and barriers destroyed then that can help speed things up.
Private land is a different matter.
If the landowner and a policeman attend within 24 hours the landowner then asks them to vacate now (by giving them a time limit say by morning or anything they are giving them permission to stay ergo you don't give any time).
If they don't leave then the police are able to make them leave.
If you don't make it within the 24 hours the landowner has to go through the rigmarole of court. Which can take weeks and weeks.
However all the above is only useful if the local police act. If they are not fully convergent with the law OR interpret it squiff, they do nothing and wash their hands of it.

Islay is not unique at all Naomi, I have been around travellers all my life, they have wintered on our ground and my current partner is a Romanian Roma, and I've never had more issues with them than with any other type of people and in some regards a good deal less. There are many types of traveller and like every other social or racial group some are good, some are bad and most are right in the middle, you all seem to be missing this in your frenzy to lump everyone together.
