Clearly motoring is so cheap that the masses have personal private transport. Surely it's time to start charging by the mile/time of day for motorways.

Is that not why we pay road tax TTT?
//Surely it's time to start charging by the mile/time of day for motorways.//

Charging by the mile already happens. It's called 'the price of fuel', most of which is tax.
If they do decide to charge for motorway use I hope they use the system used in Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic etc where you pay a one-off fee for a year's use; stopping every few miles at toll booths is irritating and time wasting. On top of that it gives them the perfect way of catching you speeding, as all the toll-tickets are time-stamped so your average speed between toll booths is simple to calculate.
Adopts adenoidal tone and says there's no such thing as road tax.

no, motoring is far to cheap we pay a bit of tax but not nearly enough to ease congestion. Poor people can afford to transport 3 empty seats every where, QED it's much too cheap. PS I count myself as poor. I have 2 cars and 3 motor bikes, I have a mate who has 8 cars, all legal. Neither of us are wealthy. If this amount of poor people can afford to clogg the roads up to the extent that they are considering putting traffic lights on slip roads then clearly it's far too cheap.
Question Author
of course doug is correct there is no such thing as road tax.
TTT, what you are suggesting is that they should make motoring so expensive that some poorer people will not be able to afford it and that will ease congestion .by driving them off the motorways,
Why should we pay for hold up's, over priced food / fuel at Services don't give the Gov Idea's TTT I think we are ripped off as it is.
You know some well off poor people, the poor I know have to walk everywhere.
Question Author
danny, yes, we should use the money to fund proper public transport.
TWR, I should have said "for private use".
Pie in the sky TTT. There is adequate public transport in most of our big cities and yet they are the most congested.
Question Author
hence the word "proper" danny!
Positive answer NO, do you not think we the motorist pay enough? now if your Q would have been, do you think the Tax loop holes should be seriously be looked into & whoever swindles the state should be jailed, I would 100% agree with you.
Question Author
"do you not think we the motorist pay enough? " - thought this post was clear enough. NO motoring is too cheap if poor people can afford it.
TTT, our cities are not big enough to take any more public transport, and even if they were you still would not get people to give up using their cars.
Question Author
they are if there were a lot less cars
If they want to start charging TTT, start charging all the Foreign transport coming into the UK From every port Dover Mainly, this could be done by taking their Reg / Taco / Speedometer reading, calculate the mileage on that vehicles return to whatever port that vehicle embarks at, & again this could easily be done, the Gov said they were going to do it, have they? if it was the other way around it would, Yes, they do pay tolls but not every country.
All the foreign lorries coming here pay through the nose for diesel, providing they do enough miles to need a refuel. Diesel costs 15-20p a litre more here than in France and Belgium.
Wow, what a really crappy attitude!

What if the poor people need transport for work?
Question Author
well with brexit and all the thrupney we are getting from them they'll be getting huge tarrifs on top too unless the EU get their april in gear.
