Sqad - //"Child" is now a defined legal term and i do understand that, but i wonder if, in the world of "human emotions" the legality is forgotten? //

We are not talking 'human emotions' here.

We are talking an adult professional athlete who is earning a massive salary for his massive skills.

He lives in a world where nothing is refused, the notion of 'No you can't do that / behave that way etc. etc./ does not exist.

But as an adult, a grown-up with a partner and a child, responsibility to behave less like a randy alley cat and more like the respected and revered sportsman that he is fairly and squarely his - and failed utterly in every aspect.

As long as we keep shrugging our shoulders and smiling wrly and saying 'Boys will be boys ...' this kind of abuse will continue.

We as a society need to accept the crime, punish the criminal, and stop acting as though it is just one of those things.

andy, that's an excellent post at 14:48.
divebuddy - //AH. Well, you would be wrong there then. Mind you, I did bring mine up bearing in mind the real world. You know, one that requires some parental responsibility, setting a moral compass, that sort of thing. All my children have gone on to successful careers and a happy life. //

Then spare a thought for those who have not been raised by responsible parents and have been preyed on by predators like Johnson.

Would you have liked the thought that someone was 'keeping your daughter warm ...' until her sixteenth birthday?

Or is that just OK for other people's children?

Surely you are not suggesting that adult emotions regress during adulthood, I would have thought that adulthood was when emotions became obvious and maybe dangerous.

and that is what we are doing.
Re. Sqad's post (with which I wholeheartedly endorse) it would be interesting to hear at what age AB ers first had sexual intercourse. In my case I was sixteen, but that wasn't because of any moral or legal postponement, and the partner was fifteen (I think).
But there had been lots of fumblings and gropings well before that!

divebuddy - //AH, Why do you have to take everything so seriously. You seem to think that the views expressed on here (specially your own) are akin to the ten commandments and offer the only sensible way forward for mankind. In truth the world isn't much interested in the opinions of people who live with multiple cats (for example). //

Call me old-fashioned, but I think the sexual abuse of vulnerable children is a serious subject.

People can agree with my view, disagree, or ignore me completely, but the simple fact is, sexual abuse is not something to be dismissed lightly.

We are in no position to judge the victim's parents.

Sqad - //Surely you are not suggesting that adult emotions regress during adulthood, I would have thought that adulthood was when emotions became obvious and maybe dangerous. //

A lot of professional footballers are emotionally under-developed adolescents.

From an age where their talent becomes apparent, which is usually their early teens, they enter a different world, and by the time they are adult and professional players, their world is established - money, fame, adoration, girls, anything you want when you want.

That environment for young men who have never had to face any level of responsibility is dangerous, and situations like the case under discussion result from it.

The majority of footballers manage to adapt without behaving as though the entire female sex is their for their delight and amusement, but enough don't, and that is what society should address.
ag - //We are in no position to judge the victim's parents. //

I did not wish to infer that the parents in this case in any way contributed to the situation in which their daughter found herself, and I endeavour to remain non-judgemental where the facts are not obvious.

If I gave that impression in my post, it was unintentional.
PiedPiper - //Is there any proof she told him she was 15 ? //

I understand that the girl advised the court that she told Johnson that she was just turned fifteen when they first met, and that Johnson agreed with that when giving evidence.

The case would not have proceeded as it did if Johnson had been able to mount a defence of ignorance.

Andy - understood.

As a comparison, remember those youths hauled before the courts after the London riots who had a very good upbringing with parents being teachers, solicitors, doctors etc.

You can only do so much as a parent.
ag - //You can only do so much as a parent. //

Absolutely!

As the father of three girls, I certainly had my moments, and I would never deny the difficulties of parenthood in the modern world!!

DB > On the one hand the chance of fame/fortune, on the other formal schooling slowly goes out of the window

Which could explain some education basics being missed! As Andy mentioned yesterday clubs should perhaps be doing more to educate footballers around their responsibilities and conduct outside the stadium arena.
