So it's vital to pursue alleged sex crimes from the 1960's, but police brutality in 1984 is too long ago to be pursued.

Only in as much as both are CRIMES. And the behaviour of some police in this case is as bad as rape - both are submitting the victim to traumatic experiences - and note that I am NOT out to trivialise rape (an appalling act), but assault of any sort from supposed guardians of law and order is also reprehensible.
And what is your alternative ummmm ? I would be interested in your scale of expiration times for pursuing various crimes (e.g. rape 75 years, GBH 3 years, burglary 5 years, murder 20 years, etc etc - figures here are random for illustration only so don't go off on a tangent about my specific choices)

The police, as an entity, is a massive PR exercise placing enormous resources where there's likely to be publicity and thereby criticism of inaction.
Results will be produced to suit the mood of the country regardless of the absence of physical evidence.

I find the comments by Chris truly shocking but similar to something a few weeks back, it's accepted because of who he is. The idea of a rape victim thinking it's no big deal and buying their attackers a pint, what can one say..

Just heard John Humphries interview an ex-Policemen on the Today program, and this man confirmed that he and his colleagues had their statements dictated by senior officers. He made the point that his statement was not, therefore, his own words !
And he thought that an Enquiry should go ahead, as he was not allowed the opportunity to give his side of the story. Straight from the horses mouth it would seem !

A childhood friend I have known for 60+ years and was with him on Wednesday was at Orgreave. I trust my friend's veracity totally. He was in a different force to me. He has told me this with regard to statement dictation.
Officers from many different forces took part in the events at Orgreave on that day. They were strangers to the locale.They were housed in aircraft hangars for the week and were bussed to the various picket lines each day.
Every other week they would be sent to another mining location in the UK.
After the day was finished all the officers were gathered in a large briefing hangar and a local senior officer briefed them with regard to the statements they were about to make.
Apparently a large board was in front of them with a plan of the site and roads were marked etc. Compass points shown.etc
My friend said all statements regarding actual events were made by individual officers.All officers were told of the salient geographical points within the area of operations concerned.This was solely to provide a clear picture to those conducting the operation.
I was not there and my role in the strikes was a logistic role i.e. escorts of coaches but I believe what my Thames Valley colleague (ex) totally.

Shortly after I happened to be working with a couple of lads from his town. When I mentioned I'd seen their 'townie' on TV much hilarity followed. Turns out he was the biggest trouble maker in the Rhondda(quite an achievement) who had his own cell in the local nick, so often was he arrested for fighting.
Doubtless he'll be first in the queue for compo, which after all, is what this is all about.

Canary...I haven't thought about any scales but minors clashing with police and there's a few minor assaults. I'm sure those that were assaulted that day soon go over it and it's had no real effect on the rest of their lives. Whereas rape victims...
