divebuddy - "It's largely the people you say have a blood lust who keep the countryside in good nick. For one thing we actually do something to help rather than just talk about it. I don't think you'll find one genuine countryman who wants to blast everything out of existence. It's all about maintaining a balance."

I understand that country people know and understand their environment far better than I - a city dweller, and I am not naïve enough to pretend that I know better.

Except in one area - killing animals or birds for the pleasure of doing so is not 'managing the countryside' - it is barbaric cruelty.

I would have far more respect for defenders of blood sports if their acknowledged the reality of what they do. They clue is in the name - they spill blood for sport, and that is simply not acceptable in a modern society.
I agree, Andy....and I wish they could be honest....we just like killing birds.... rather than try to dress it up with twaddle about maintaining a balance... and caring for the countryside.....

Breeding birds to shoot...and killing raptors with poison.....is doing neither.

It's satisfying a perverted lust.

Agree Andy. Disgusting thing to do.
Well the estate owner knew he was doing it, guaranteed. it's always been common place to protect game so they are available when it's 'the season'.
As for bloodsports, they will use the guise of countryside management but IMO they are all in it for the thrill of the kill. I know from listening to colleagues who volunteer to do our local deer culls, it's the shooting they love plus some free venison. I have stronger feelings about the badger culls - undoubtedly carried out by whackos who want to pull a trigger. I doubt many of them could even begin to argue their case intelligently.
Field sports!!!! Honestly.......like I said.....haven't the guts to say what it really is they enjoy doing......as Andy said...barbaric cruelty.
I live in the country – but I’ve had many a disagreement at my dinner table with my friends who support blood sports. They enjoy the hunt/shoot – that’s all.
Spot on, ladies......they do it for the thrill of killing and nothing more.....

Yet they won't admit that and seem to want some glory for supposedly caring for our countryside......numpties.....

Divebuddy, I know I’m right. My problem is with people who claim they do it for reasons other than they like it. If you're going to do it, at least be honest about why you're doing it.
You don't like shooting......you like killing.....

I'm a fantastic shot....but I don't kill.....that's the sign of a person who is lacking....

I shoot clays. I like to think that the numerous pheasants that live on my land only stay because they know they're safe with me. Step out of the perimeter and bang - they're gone.
I never support anyone who shoots birds...and Shoota knows that....

You're wandering now.....I never go off on one.....I stand my ground but you'd go a long way to find someone who has seen me go off on one...
Divebuddy, unlike the birds you shoot for pleasure, I never explode.

That said, there are birds that must be controlled - magpies for example - but they are controlled under license. They are not meant to be shot for pleasure - although I'm sure, for some, they are.
Evening DB, you want some back-up?
