Coincidence with.......
They're saying it was shot down.
Question Author
Another Malaysian airline going missing not so long ago.
Bit early to speculate.
A military aircraft was shot down in that area recently although I think it was at a lower altitude. Effing worrying though. They will have to stop overflying that area as has been done in other trouble spots in the past.
I doubt there is a link to flight MH370

OMG, I know someone who is supposed to be on his way to KL today, on MH.
This aircraft hasn't "gone missing", they know where it crashed.

My title says 'Crashes'

The other Malaysian plane which crashed near Australia was well out of reach of Ukrainian missiles.

// Spokesman Anton Gerashenko said on his Facebook page that the plane was flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet over eastern Ukraine when it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. //

I wonder where the Ukrainians acquired these launchers? I wonder if now they have made this dreadful error, the people arming them will stop?
DTCwordfan,
Hope they are OK.
'Aviation Herald' website, which reports aircraft incidents from all over the world on a daily basis, is carrying a report that this aircraft was shot down. If so, since the aircraft would commonly have been at an altitude of 32,000 to 36,000 feet, it would have taken a fairly advanced missile - not the sort of thing carried by ground troops. If this story is true, Putin should ignore everything else, and immediately come down like a ton of bricks on whoever's responsible.

It must be terrible, especially so soon after the other one went missing.

I'm sure he will. Not sure why he should though. It is doubtful if any Russians were on the flight. The flight was nothing to do with Russian and Ukraine other than it was in Ukraine airspace.
If this was a deliberate SAM strike I wonder who was on board?
The Buk is a Russian made launcher. It is unlikely they were targetting anyone on board. They assumed it was a Russian military plane, but it was a civilian airliner.

Similarities with the Iranian airliner blown up by the US Vincennes in the Gulf in 1988.
I don't think you can realistically compare 1988 to 2014.
I doubt it was deliberately targeted as being a Malaysian airline but if anyone wanted to deliberately target anyone, websites like Flightradar would be a great help to them. "We want to get the **123 - look it`s just overhead now (according to Flightradar) Aim, Fire." Makes you think. Maybe it`s time to stop showing the details in realtime.
