Every now and again a case comes up where I start to wonder if the human race needs a cull!

TTT, I think he mixed Big Brother (the CCTV) with Big Society !
Yes a very tragic case but not at all unusual in modern Britain.

But with a little luck the Government will soon do something about the short sentences given out for these offences.

/// The draft Modern Slavery Bill aims to increase the maximum custodial sentence for offenders from 14 years to life. ///

Gromit //The Big Society at work!
Ring any bells?//
Along with TTT, I wonder just what you mean by that?

trigger; Isn't "why was no one else looking out for this person", enough?
Don't quite see why a disgusting case like this should lead to a "cull". Makes more sense, if you want to go down that road, to campaign for capital punishment in individual cases. O.K., you were speaking figuratively I guess
triggerhippy

/// It is a guess, I cannot speak for Gromit but i think he means how does a person with learning difficulties come to be the property of these people, why was no one else looking out for this person in our Big society? ///

Would he possibly be making sarcastic comment on David Cameron's 'Big Society'?

But then isn't Sheffield Council Labour led, so perhaps the fault lies much closer to home than the over all 'Big Society'
Omg. Sick people. 4 months is ridiculous. Surely even knowing about it and doing nothing is a crime?
This is a perfect demonstration of 'The Big Society' and I can't see an issue with that.

We are repeatedly told that there is a growing underclass of benefits claimants in this country and we also recognise that there is a demographic issue of an ageing population which currently is being used as a justification for immigration.

Here is a potential solution; benefits claimants could be distributed to Tax Paying households free of charge.

I could accommodate at least two of them in my garage.

They would be very useful around the place, doing the gardening, washing the cars etc

The key point is that their usefulness would increase as we get older and would probably remove or at least delay our need for Romanian 'Carers'.
The sentencing for most crimes in this country is becoming a joke. I would have given this lot at least ten years each. God knows what emotional as well as physical damage they have done to that poor lad.
We have to have more harsh punishments .
Poor soul, I hope he gets all the help he deserves. And yes TTT, I agree with your cull comment whether tongue in cheek or not.
Not enough. This may be sentencing by guideline, but this case calls for exemplary sentencing. The victim had serious injuries. We could see from the tape shown on TV that injuries were inflicted with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; maximum life imprisonment. We have had cases like this before and there is reason to believe that they are not unusual.

The principal offender should have got 12 years, and let the Court of Appeal sort out the inevitable appeal. They can't interfere, as the Crown won 't appeal this sentence as too lenient, but, with 12 years they can lay down rules for cases such as this, which may well mean more that less than 7 years not being appropriate.
Question Author
how is this an example of "Big society" - what is that anyway. I cannot believe those scoring political points out of cruelty, How would this have been prevented under any society?
It wouldn't TTT, sadly there are a LOT of evil people out there.
I'm not generally given to violence but could happily punch all day the smug face of that 19 year old piece of sh*t known as their son and not get bored.
He looked the type who likes to play the hard man but cacks himself when the big boys step in.
zeuhl; Your link tells us; "The stated aim is to create a climate that empowers local people and communities, building a "big society" that will take power away from politicians and give it to people."
What the hell has that got to do with these pond-life beating the crap out of defenceless young man? Are you suggesting that these gratuitous acts of violence are something to do with central government?
^

Well those 'empowered' local people had taken responsibility for looking after the poor fellow, saved the authorities from doing it and given him useful employment

which, in these times of Welfare cuts, is what the Government have called upon the 'Big Society' to provide instead.

I see! so it's all the government's fault, well I'm glad that's all sorted.
From where do you glean your ideas? I thought The Daily Worker was obsolete.
I really wish there was someone out there who would dish out the same treatment to those mindless thugs.
