Rape happens in all cultures. It's viewing women as second classed citizens that's the problem in cases like this.

Sadly yes, people have become more aware of this as a result of the recent death following rape in India. It happened on a bus of all places, and the bus driver is said to be involved. Women appear to be fair game, and a woman or girl walking alone in some of the villages is at great risk, according to reports I've read.
