I did find it all a bit 'how do they know what was said and done'?!
I don't know the royal family, so I can't say. But, I'm a bit surprised that nobody appears to have remarked on the importance that mobile phones played in the film.
dramatic license is always used - to a degree.

however, from chronicles, witnesses, personal accounts and other sources .. the film did portray broadly the attitude of the royal family
much of it was made up, how can the film makers know what conversations the Queen had with Prince Philip and the children, as well as her advisor's. I didn't like the film i must say.
I did enjoy the film very much although like em10 I took the 'family conversations' with a pinch of salt. The most moving aspect came near the end as the Queen and Prince Philip were looking at the floral tributes outside the palace when the little girl gave her the flowers. Michael Sheen oozed as Tony Blair and Cherie came across as pretty odious.
Under no circumstances would the boys habe been left to "go back to sleep" having just been told of their mother's death! I always liked the part near the end where Blair was seen to stick up for the Queen against the sneerers in the office, led by Campbell.
We don't know what goes on in private conversation, but on the whole I think the film was pretty true to life in their actions at the time.
