Are you, like me, sick of all this Titanic nonsense?

Yes totally OTT.
I think it's right to remember the people - I think the media badwagon is irritating. Today at our library we have 'Titanic craft sessions' for kids. Now that's b0ll0x.
I've invented a new word - badwagon...and I like it.
Maybe Mosaic, but I bet it goes down well!

You never know when being able to fashion a lifejacket from egg cartons and sticky backed tape might come in useful
yes - even bloody stamps, I see. I guess we have DiCaprio and Winslett to thank for the hype.

No disrespect to those who died, and in fact to the next generation, most of whom will be dead now...ok mark it with a service, but not national outpouring.

some really odd comments being made - "my great grandmother didn't know where my great grandfather was so she got out of the lifeboat to hold hands with him." How does she know that? - pure speculation.....esp as they were the only two of the family aboard.
Do you think that the hype makes people feel obliged to recall heartstring-tugging details like that?
Oh Everton...grumble groan....
There is no doubt at all that the national interest / obsesion with the Titanic is entirely wrapped up in the success of the film.

Had the cinematic recording been left soley to 'A Night To Remember' which is a far superior film, the disaster would have assumed the same level as any other disaster - marked, but not obsessed over.

Captain Smith came from where i live - i can virtually see the street where he as born from my office window, but apart from a memorial service on Sunday, there is little else around the town in the way of commemoration.

Modern society loves bandwaggons - this is just one more.
Sany, totally fed up with it. Glad to see you back.
However there are some droll comments about.

This modern update of the incident though it may also apply to the Concordia:

"Ooh my husband's fallen overboard. Hold the lifeboat. I've got to update my Facebook status."
bored with it theres far too much on tv :(
I really am bored stiff with it....... if they brought the whole thing up from the bottom....now that I would consider worth seeing.....
I lnow have a bizarre image the idea of a load of seals singing hymns as the iceberg sank majestically beneath the waves with the polar bears hogging the floes (lifeboats)
When I read about it I had a sinking feeling.
I am surprised by the number of people who remember their ancestors who were on the Titanic but not those who died in the two worlld wars saving us
No, I find it all interesting.
i would rather they had left the ship intact, or what is left of it, including all the artefacts and anything to do with it. I hated the film with De Caprio, most boring hours i have ever spent. I wish that the hoo haa would die down, and let it go.
i agree its about time they let this rest the longer it goes on the more unbelievable the stories seem to get
lots of misinformation, and indeed lives ruined at the time over who was a coward or not, and only in recent years has the truth for want of a better word come out about some peoples actions. It's a tragedy, but there have been many more like it, some even worse if you think of it, like the ships carrying children across the Atlantic in WW2 being bombed and sunk. Perhaps it captures the imagination of some because it was supposed to be unsinkable, and the largest ship on the ocean, well it sank, what more can one add.
