At last! Tom Petty And The heartbreakers are playing a London show in June, and I am down to interview him and Milke Campbell.
I can't wait - I bought his first album the week it was out, and saw him as the support act on Nils Lofgren's tour, and never got to see the band since.
There's a song I like, though I'm not sure what it's called. It goes something like "runaway train never coming back".. ?
For some reason, I think it's by Tom Petty, though I'm probably wrong.
Does anyone know what it is?
Thought I'd put it on this thread, seeing as how it's Tom Petty related :-)
Lucky you Andy. he used to be (at least) so sexy! I saw them at Hammersmith Odeon maybe round 79/80 ish. Can't see Zhukov's link so don't know what he suggested but my fave track is 'American Girl'.
Prudie, I remember seeing him sing with Bob Dylan, when I was younger, and thinking he was rather handsome. Not sure how old I was... must have been quite young though. Not sure if that's a bit weird, actually..
I saw the same tour as Andy - May 1977 at Birmingham Odeon for me.
One of the best gigs I ever saw - after a brilliant set from Tom Petty there was definitely an air at half-time of "Lofgren's going to have to go some to beat that" - which he did - even after all this time I can remember the buzz as he hit the chords for "Keith Don't Go".
I was writing reviews for a Birmingham listings magazine at the time (unpaid - but at least an occasional free ticket) and blagged a backstage pass after the show - didn't get to speak to Mr Petty but Nils was a lovely bloke (for all of my five minutes ;)
But don't start me on "backstage at the Odeon" - I still get flashbacks of ten minutes with Lou Reed around the same era - what a scary man :+()
How did you get the chance to interview him Andy. did you pull some strings or was your name just plucked from the air ?
I remember going to see him when I lived in Birmingham too. Great !!
sunny-dave - i saw the show at Trentham Gardens, here in Stoke, and as you say, there was definitely a vibe about the sheer power of the heartbreakers, and the need for NL to up his game - which of course he duly did! the time when Nils and his brother Tom were soloing, and played each other's lead lines on each others guitar was mind-bending, what a night!
Thanks for the tip-off andy. I've never seen him live, but love his music. Just been on Ticketmaster and tickets are not available till Friday. Guess where I will be at 9.00 on Friday!
Hi TheOtherHalf - I will be interviewing TP and Mike Campbell because I write for music magazines as a freelance.
On this occasion, time permitting, I will be interviewing for Guitar Buyer Magazine* please feel free to check out this superlative mag - I have material in most months.
Next month should have my interview with Orianthi - guitarist for Michael Jackson and Alice Cooper.
*Other guitar magazines are available but nowhere near as good because I am not in them!!!
Dam The Torpedoes Refugee In between band gigs I used to do DJ sets ,I Played a Pub that was a little on the nasty side a guy came up and asked for TOM PETTY Refugee which I did not have ,I sent my roadie to buy a copy, I am so pleased I did as not only did I have one of the best nights I had repeat booking forever and of course I was turned on to TOM PETTY
I love Tom Petty. It's a shame that he often gets lumped in with other American "rawk" artists like John Cougar et al, because he's so much more talented.
Zhukov - you will have noticed then - that in Silence Of The Lambs, the Senator's daughter is driving home rocking out to American Girl - and so she should!
