Am I alone in thinking this is a rather bizarre solution to shortage of toll booth staff on motorway bridge - i.e. close the bridge.

Bizarre and illogical. They could have simply made it temporarily toll-free. Arguing that it would be unsafe is nonsensical, given that travel in the other direction is permanently toll-free.
The alternative would have been to allow drivers to cross the bridge without having to pay, and that would never do, would it?
No. They should have closed the toll booths. They've done it before and I think they'll be doing it permanently soon. (could be wrong about the latter, don't write in)
A disgraceful way to treat travellers. I can't see the difference (financially) between closing the bridge (= no income) or making it Toll-free (= no income, but doesn't inconvenience travellers).

That was my suspicion bookbinder.
The bridge reopened shortly after 2pm.
I can only guess that the last person on shift (minimum wage employee probably , and likely to have done a double shift by now) took it upon themselves to leave the barriers down rather than open. Eventually someone had the sense to go along and raise them.
Well the answer make it toll free is good ,however the solution is the same as the railways get the managers off there backsides and make them work if they actually experienced life on the shop floor things would change
