Im a horror film buff,
But I think that the most disturbing films have been the ''Hostel' films.
Loved them!
Next have to be the 'Saw'' franchise and then the classics, the Excorcist etc.

The best horror movies are the ones where you don't get to see the really gory bits ;-)
Have a look at "Get Out" by Jourdan Peele. Does not initially look like a disturbing film but wow, superb.

Yep, chico is correct and TBF the best "horror" is not horror at all. Clever suspense really and disturbing ideas. I'm not a great fan of the Wes Craven type stuff for example.
Scanners - the thought of someone being able to blow my head up, scared me rigid.
And old film, 1970s I think, called 'When a Stranger Calls'. No blood, no violence, but once seen never forgotten - for me at least. The later remake is not a patch on it.
David Lynch’s Eraserhead.
I have got and enjoy the "Hostel" films but am too frightened to see "Saw" ones.
The Haunting is amazing, all suggestion, but fabulous.

And a little known Roman Polanski film, The Tenant is really creepy.

When it dawns on you what's going on...
Zacs - Eraserhead I'd fabulous, all that low industrial noise constantly going in the background, you don't realise how much it's winding you up...
The Gangs of New York I found quite disturbing.
I seen a Belgian/French language movie called “man bites dog” about a guy making a documentary about and following a serial killer… filmed in black and white and made like a documentary, it was quite different at the time.
This one is pretty disturbing....

Always jump at the end of Carrie even though I have seen it a number of times. Exorcist was good when it first came to this country in the seventies. These days it has been cut to hell with so much of the original cut out.
Not a horror film, but the first 15 or so minutes of Saving Private Ryan disturbed me so much that i had to pause the film for some time before continuing to watch.
Of course i had seen black and white archive footage of the war, and learned all about it at school, but this 15 minutes made the sheer horror of it much clearer in my mind.
Another film i found 'disturbing' - but for entirely different reasons - was The Elephant Man. A great film with some superb acting, but i could never watch it again?
The Birds
Andy - ‘disturbing’ on a whole new level isn’t it! I’d forgotten about the thrum-thrum-thrum in the background. Don’t have nightmares!
It absolutely is. All the more for being so insidious.

You don't notice it at first, but it's worming it's way into your subconscious and twisting it slowly but surely...
there shouldn't be anything much missing from The Exorcist, shedman, but TV channels may make ther own cuts. The director's cut was longer once he'd put in the spiderwalk business.
I saw House of Wax starring Vincent Price when I was a teenager. I thought it was very scary and I could never watch it again.
