Because kids need their dinners in the day because they go to bed early.

You don't go to a nice restaurant and and get given the 'tea' menu...

Look at it this way.....I was brought up having dinner mid-day and tea at about 5pm. Now.....when I went to Uni, all the successful guys were calling the evening meal DINNER. so wanting to be like them.......I changed.......see??

as I said, I would graciously ask to see the menu, I wouldn't need to stipulate Lunch/Dinner, I would know by what time I was dining

Yes Bobbi - but restaurants open for 'lunch' and often have a different menu to when the open for 'dinner' So if you go in the evening you'll be given the 'dinner menu' not the 'lunch menu'

If you're really posh you go out for supper, I have yet to see a 'supper' menu..........
