If I'm doing a series I tend to prefer Brit stuff, as the American stuff (and I'm sure it's great) tends to have loads of episodes over loads of series, and I haven't got the patience to stay with it.

So for me it has to be Peaky Blinders which I thought was TV gold. I loved it.

Everybody in it was superb, but I felt Tom Hardy was simply brilliant, and it was a shame he wasn't in it more.

I'm not sure how to interpret gritty, but The Prisoner was excellent (going back a few years, but TV was generally better then anyway).

Boys from the blackstuff gets my vote,i also loved the charles dickens adaptions that the bbc used to show on a sunday evening in the 70's.

Game of Thrones ... I keep seeing re-runs and they're excellent.

Also, the early seasons of Homeland ...

Apart from the ones already mentioned, I thought Taboo was really good. Another Tom Hardy one.

I really liked Taboo, Tom Hardy and his dad wrote it and Steven Knight the creator of Peaky Blinders worked with them to make the series. There was to be a second series, I'm still hopeful.  Hardy was mesmerising.

I enjoyed The Fall with Jamie Dornan, and the Devil's Hour was excellent too.

The Fall was brilliant, Karamia.

Mad Dogs, is another favourite.

Stranger Things mentioned. Never seen it but going to see the play. Bad idea?

Agree with almost all of those already mentioned, but as a 'one-off' series, i have to say The Shadow Line is just about the best i've seen. Slick script from Hugo Blick, great storylone and some superb acting from the likes of Rafe Spall, Christopher Eccleston, Stephen Rea (the most unlikely hit man you're ever likely to come across), Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lesley Sharp. Very gritty, imho. The only box-set CD i have ever bought.

Lesley Sharpe is an unappreciated actor, my wife still watches Bob & Rose occasionally

Underbelly was good in its day.

Dalziel & Pascoe. A Touch of Frost.

I've never watched Peaky Blinders, probably because it seems like a daft title. Is there any way of watching it now?

iPlayer, Barsel

Homeland when Damien Lewis was in it. Used to have me sitting on the edge of the settee.

Happy Valley was gritty enough for me and Line of Duty.

Thank you Barry.

Mad Men. Loved it.

Can anyone identify this scene from a gritty drama I can't recall the name of?

Chap suspended upside down from a rotating ceiling fan, throat cut, I think there were other dead bodies in the room.  Possibly a bookies

What about Terry and June? The grim reality of living in the badlands of Purley.
