//Victoria pulls out of hosting 2026 competition after state premier and republican Daniel Andrews insisted the event isn't worth the money//

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12309609/Future-Commonwealth-Games-thrown-chaos-Victoria-cancels-2026-competition-scramble-host-critics-warn-games-no-longer-relevant-amid-anti-royal-sentiment.html

Commonwealth Games Australia boss Craig Phillips said that Daniel Andrews is grossly exaggerating the cost of the games. Sour politics at play here I suspect, but I don’t think it's the end of the games. I read elsewhere that Sadiq Khan has said that London will be happy to host. Perhaps he'll use the money from the extortionate green taxes he's imposing upon motorists.

It's what we've come to expect from the descendants of criminals.
Apparently, Birmingham bods have said they'll host again. Bit of a joke, with several countries wanting to leave Commonwealth anyway.
Question Author
Which countries want to leave - and why don't they?
Are you serious TTT??
the state PM ( victoria) said it was a straighforward ( plus or minus) decision

but didnt count the extra bits like tourists coming over and buying tinnies....

an oz being a kill-joy - wonders never cease.

all the olympic games were loss makers until the one in America

a likely end of the commonwealth is to be when they decide the Head is elective and should NOT be Wills

(shades of the Aliens Bill er 1702 - scorts parliament passed a bill which said the successor to Queen Anne as monarch of Scortland should NOT be the Monarch of England - obvious political crisis occurred)

not too wimpy pointy-head history is it?
Are you serious TTT??
yes he is, and that is the Great Pity

leave commonwealth - a few want Presidents - ( who are current Prime Ministers) and want to act up like the QUEEN - but they can stay in the commonwealth
ONE ( Angola) was not part of the british empire ( portuguese) and was accepted.
Even allowing for the cost being a bit inflated to prove his point they are still pretty high.

I'd have thought any politician would have struggled to justify paying that out when people are struggling.

Genghis wont care what the people think though I suppose.
it depends if you count the fringe benefits - more tourists, more bums in seats, more tinnies

with very large organisations ( State of Victoria I wd class as one) you can make any partial budget ( such as 'Games') balance or show a surplus
//it depends if you count the fringe benefits - more tourists, more bums in seats, more tinnies//

Yes, but the people that pay (local tax payers) dont see that it goes to big corporations. However it is hidden or portrayed.
Denver did that yonks ago - awarded the Winter Olympics but decided not to hold them after all, because of the cost. I remember the moaning on AB at the cost of the London Olympics, so it's no surprise if Victorians also decide the games aren't worth the candle.
the people that pay (local tax payers) dont see it

what they dont see money from beds at hotels, providing means to tourists, and selling tinnies? - righto if you say so !
I was amazed at that there London Olympics in 2012 opening and closing ceremonies. If they scrap them maybe they can afford to host the games .What gets me is Why the bid in the first place.
Maybe it's Daniel Andrews that isn't worth the money ? One needs to understand the value of things.
//what they dont see money from beds at hotels, providing means to tourists, and selling tinnies? - righto if you say so !//

Thats a minute number who benefit, mainly corporations, compared to those that have to stump up.

So yes I say so and I dont blame the Victorians for saying enough is enough given the times the World is in at present.
//Why the bid in the first place.//

Maybe times were not so hard when they put the bid in? I dont think anyone could foresee what a plandemic and a war in Ukraine would do to the World economy.
"ONE ( Angola) was not part of the British empire (Portuguese) and was accepted."

When did that happen?
// ONE ( Angola) was not part of the british empire ( portuguese) and was accepted. //

one was indeed accepted (in 1995) that wasn't part of the british empire, but it was Mozambique, not Angola - both were portuguese though.
Countries that are making noises about leaving are Belize, Bahamas,Jamaica, Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis and St Lucia whike Australia, New Zealand and Canada have strong republican movements but say they would still support the British monarch, whatever that means.
What do you think Naomi? On the one hand you're criticising someone for cancelling the games and on the other you're criticising someone else for offering to host them. Which way do you think it should go?
Question Author
I think the games should go ahead, tomus … wherever that may be.
