It needs two presenters as much as sports programmes need several pundits ie not at all. (I don't watch either, so it doesn't really bother me how many they have).
The dynamics of presentation have been tinkered with over the years, and the defaults that companies seem to have settled for is - one for news, two for lightweight magazine programmes, multiple for sports.
It's not about 'need' rather than what fits the format, and that the viewers are comfortable with.
