John Hannah was hopelessly miscast
OK, thanks. P. D. James' character Adam Daiglish would also make for some interesting viewing. And I think that there is another Scottish writer, similar to Rankin, who developed an interesting character, but I can't remember the writer or the detective although I've read a lot of the books.
From the 60s No Hiding Place with Raymond Francis and a young Johnny Briggs (Mike Baldwin in Corrie). Also Perry Mason with Raymond Burr.
Hannah was Hopeless as Rebus. But then he's poor in everything I've ever seen him in - especially his pathetic attempt at an English accent in The Mummy.
As with most of these polls it's to do with the age of the responder. Most people that know who jack regan is are dead by now. Sherlock has won because of the recent series but it should have won because of jeremy brett who was brilliant in the role.
OK, I was wrong at 2251. I was thinking of the English writer, Peter Robinson, whose detective character was Alan Banks.
I am a great fan of Ruth Rendell but her books, though brilliant, do not translate easily to the screen.
Several of the Banks novels were adapted for tv with Stephen Tomkinson in the lead role.
One of my fav fictional detectives is Roy Grace (author - Peter James) and I did read that two feature length films were to be shown in 2020, with John Simm taking the lead. But then Covid 19 descended upon us :-(
That's a shame Ken . I like the Roy Grace books as well.
As for Stephen Tomkinson as Banks, I thought he was dreadful,so wooden and ruined the picture in my mind of Banks in the books.
There is only one Sherlock Holmes - and that is Jeremy Brett

In my book ,Columbo is the guvonor

since this was the result of a viewer's poll, i'd expected Luther to be higher than he was, if only because he makes the laydeez glue themselves to their chairs......

right so if they did it via twitface etc then no wonder it's so wrong. SH deserves the top spot but close by should have been the guvnor:

after some typical Sweeney action (can't remember the episode) came this exchange:-

Carter: hey guv your nose is bleeding.
Regan: yes George it must be the altitude.
Never heard of this Shilo Pitt detective so had to Google them. Did Brad's daughter play the part of a detective ?
Question Author
OG I meant to say "what a shilo pitt"
I'm telling Brad !
Question Author
clearly Mr Pitt and his Mrs are not familiar with spoonerisms!
I usually avoid cop programmes like the plague but have to agree with TTT. Jack Regan, played by John Thaw, was the best imo . When I was working,'Hill Street Blues' ,was almost a cult following. I think all thirty two of us watched it.
Can I just say TTT I'm loving your latest avatar. No prizes for guessing why you chose it LOL;-)
