Columbo for me, although he's not British, I notice he is in the list. Hated Stephen Tomkinson as Banks, Banks was written as more handsome and debonair than Tomkinson could every portray. I like John Simms very much, but again Roy Grace is described as a much bigger man, while John Simms is only slight in build. However, I would definitely watch if they did re-schedule after covid.
I quite liked Inspector George Gently, mainly for the 1960s setting. Ditto Endeavour.

Do you mind!!!!!!

The Sweeney first aired in 1975, I was twenty that year, and I'm only sixty-five now!!

Cheek!!!!!

Young people today ….. (sound of muttering and mumbling and a door quietly closing …)
Wot no Sweeney????

SHEEEAAATTT IT!!!!!!!!
When I was in hospital the lady in the bed next to me was called Holmes. My surname is Moriarty. I convinced the nurse to write Sherlock and professor and see if anyone noticed.
For me, Basil Rathbone is Sherlock Holmes.
Andy....have you seen The Sweeney with Ray Winston? I thought it was brilliant.
This poll was conducted among current ITV viewers, most of whom will never have watched or even heard of The Sweeney, No Hiding place, Peter Wimsey, Sexton Blake etc.
I used to love The Sweeney as a kid. The one with Ray Winston is very violent in comparison.

I've seen the Movie version with Ray Winstone, it'd alright but not a patch on the real Guvna! YOU'RE NICKED SUNSHINE!
I liked Gene Hunt - Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes. Not PC enough for today's audience I guess
Does anybody else remember Fabian of the Yard? Perhaps he doesn't count as they were real stories from his memoirs; he was played by Bruce Seaton, I think.
As Iluvmargie said Roy Grace is a bigger man than John Simm, also considerably taller.
John Simm is 5'9" the same as Alan Banks. Stephen Tomkinson isn't. I don't like him as Alan Banks because of this and also he is far too intense, for the role.
TTT....give it a go. I think it's sympathetic to the original but just more realistic.

Actually cashier, after just reading your post, John Simm would be far better to play Alan Banks, just about sexy enough!
For all the Jeremy Brett fans I am currently recording the shows from series 1. They are on ITV 4 at 07.40 am each morning and then ITV 4+1 at 08.40 am.

I was always a Rathbone man but for a more recent version I Liked Johnny Lee Miller in Elementary, nice variation having Lucy Liu as Watson. Cummerbund is pretty good but I think JLM has the edge.
1 Rebus (Ken Stott) by a country mile for me (and the books are brilliant too, if read in order of publication).
2 Morse
3 Taggart (Mark McManus series only though)
Where did Inspector Gadget come,.....and Danger Mouse?
