Did anyone watch this drama tonight? I did and thoroughly enjoyed it. Had to record Call the Midwife for another day.

Yes. I missed the first hour because I thought it started at 2100. :-(
I enjoyed the last 70mins. Michael Gambon did a good portrayal. Not the best I have seen but I will watch it and record it on catch up. It will join my recording of The Wilderness Years. I thought that was a better portrayal of Sir Winston Churchill.

I actually meant The Gathering Storm with Albert Finney as Sir Winston and Ronnie Barker as his valet. That was my favourite portrayal and Robert Hardy did a fine job as well in another drama.
I liked the comment Sir Winston made to his nurse in Churchill's Secret tonight. "You can't be a coward to grow old" I have come to that conclusion as well in the last 2 months.
retrocop, that comment" you can't be a coward to grow old" reminded me of the one Mae West made," Old age is no place for sissies". I too have come to the same conclusion.
I'll watch the drama later, it sounds good.

It was very good and worth watching but I have to confess to a large biased view.
I have always been a staunch admirer of Sir Winston Churchill in spite of a few calamities and unfortunate outcomes of a small few decisions he made.
I enjoyed this tremendously. If we can make programs of this quality, I'm not sure why we can't do it more often.

Gambon was very good, but so was Lindsay Duncan. I think she is one of our best actresses, who we don't see often enough.

Well done ITV !

Yes full credit to Lindsay Duncan. The emotion that poured out of her when describing Marigold's death was amazing acting.
Drama? Here's something factual about Churchill

Its already on catchup if you missed it or part of it.
I thoroughly enjoyed, it. Brilliant acting.
Lynn_M.....you risk ridicule if you quote Irving.

Irving is a widely discredited selective historian. He has been accused of holocaust denial. He was sentenced to three months in prison, in Austria for holocaust denial. He is also famous for his racist and antisemitic sentiments, both publicly and privately.

An example of his duplicity and stupidity " In January 1990, he gave a speech in Moers where he asserted that only 30,000 people died at Auschwitz between 1940–45"

If you look at the people he calls his friends these days, the Ultra Far Right, in America as well as Europe, its easy to see why anything he has ever said has to be taken with a wheelbarrow-full of salt.

Here is his Wiki entry.....makes for very interesting reading, something that perhaps you should consider doing.

Absolutely nothing to do with the TV drama but..................I plunked off school for the very first time in my life on the day Churchill died.
@Aneurin Bevan: I'm fed up with the smear campaign against David Irving and 'Holocaust Deniers.' What about the Holodomor Deniers? You're the one that 'risks ridicule' when the truth comes out. It's certainly true that in many European countries (and Canada), that if you 'deny the Holocaust,' you risk being sent to prison.

Sounds like the old Soviet Union to me, and such draconianism should raise a red flag (but not one with a hammer and sickle on it)
I'm sorry Lynne, but you should have done your homework !

Irving is a nasty subversive, who has consistently denied the holocaust.

Question for you :::

Do you agree with Irving ? Did only 30,000 people die at Auschwitz ?

Yes or no ?
@Aneurin Bevan: I've been doing my homework for quite some time and what I've seen doesn't correspond with what we've been told. Now here's some homework for you:

(and my name is Lynn)

The nurse didnt exist - I wondered why she was doing a one-in-one
so remember it was a dray-ma
Not real - a play

and the secret wasnt really a secret

everyone knew at the time that during his second ministry
Churchill was going ga-ga and for one played with little duckies in his bath

they also knew that he was baiting Eden with - 'hold on - your time will come - but not now ...."

wasnt there a minor player - Lady Audrey - nicknamed Lady Disorderly for her public displays of drunkeness ?

Lord Moran - they got it right it was more-un - went for moolah and published his clinical memoirs in 1966 and the BMA voted 290-6 at its AGM in that year that clinical confidences should survive death ....

so Life was kinda different then
