Is any one else sick of these? I used to really look forward to the Sunday night film on C4 and now we have the same old repeats of these, as if programs like Heartbeat, The Royal and Monarch of the Glen aren't enough to send us to sleep on a Sunday.

Totally sick of them.  Why did they need to do 100 greatest cartoons followed by 100 greatest kids TV?  I know they are different but the overlap was so great, did they really need 6 hours of TV?

I know! A few weeks ago it was 100 Greatest Comedians followed by 100 Greatest Comedy Sketches, so you bascially saw all the same clips.

Soon they'll have the 100 Greatest 100 Greatest.

If they have to show them do it on a Saturday night when most people are out and put the film back to a Sunday.

its lazy TV at its worse. Whats annoys me the most  is having to listen to the rent- a- celebrities they have on giving their two bobs worth. Does anyone really care what Lisa Rogers opinion is on Monty Python. I'd rather watch Heartbeat and thats saying something

I found the tedious(and obvious) drug gags that littered the Children's TV one irritating - not to mention refernces to sevearal characters as "gay icons" - yeuch!

TV nostalgia was much better served by Frank Muir's TV Heaven in 1992.

I think there is worse stuff on the telly, but I do think that it is lazy.

A lot of the content seems to be reused on different top 100's, and it does get tedious.  However, there is pretty much naff all on most of the time, so, for me, a Sunday is no different.

very true, cruth, why do gay people assume there is gay symbolism in everything, or that everyone is waiting to come out of the closet
They always have on the same minor 'celebs' giving their opinion as well, except I can't remember any of their names! "Oh, well I just love this blah blah blah" YAWN. It seems that the Simpsons win for every category going lol. Coming soon, the 100 Best Simpsons Episodes.
I must confess to having a shameful addiction to these shows - although I admit they're pretty repetitive. Either they actually repeat them too often, or they blur the boundaries as mentioned above. Since when has The Simpsons been a kid's show anyway?

As for the 'celebs', do Andrew Collins, Lisa Rogers and Rowland b****y Rivron ever appear on anything else? And is there anyone in the country who thinks that Iain Lee is funny (apart from Iain Lee, of course)?

Who was that ghastly woman billed as a "writer" who gave a "Marxian" analysis of various shows like Bagpuss?

Not clever - Not funny.

As for why there are so many of them....

1) they are cheap to make, just a good editor and a front man.

2) ratings show as the program gets nearer No. 1, more people stay tuned in to find out what it is. so the add breaks increase in number and so does the advert revenue.

3) giving a top 100 of anything is bound to get free advertising in newspapers, as they are quick to jump on the 'Whats hot/Not' bandwagon.

Sad old world innit!

I agree that these programs are a cheap attempt at tv. I also believe that pop idol, big brother, fame academy, and all those other reality tv shows are a load of brainwashing rubbish, strategically aimed to rid people of their hard earned cash. Tv used to be so much better 20-30 years ago!

i agree with littleoldme i love to watch them even though i know their crap. i think some of the people offering comment on these programmes earn their living from it.
although they are quite repetitive in some aspects e.g as already pointed out about the kids tv and cartoons thing, i must admit i have enjoyed a couple of them. But i was a tad annoyed at the '100 best comedy sketches' edition because that was exactly what i was hoping to see! 100 best comedy sketches! Not about 20 seconds of each one interspersed by some nobody spouting on about great it was!
The question I 'd like answered is who votes for these. Every programme is prefaced with the words "as voted by the British public" and yet I've never seen anything that's asked me for my vote.

For example, I spend rather too much of my hard-earned on CDs, so if they were looking around for votes for the 100 Greatest Albums I would have expected to see something in one of the shops or websites that I go to....but there was nada.

Is the list just decided by a few Channel 4 execs, a handful of reseachers and a quick vox pop? Or

I voted on the top 100 albums by going on the website, but felt pretty cheated - you have 100 albums to choose from, so basicaly they have their top 100 and you put them in order.

The Prodigy album they had was Fat of the Land, where I think you'll find most people say they prefer one of their earlier two.  Oasis had What's the Story?, when, again, most people I know tend to vouch for Definitely Maybe.

There are some people on the Z List that survive on " 100 Greatest " programmes . The format is lazy and cheap but ( presumably ) popular as they keep making them. BTW re the Childrens TV one - i enjoyed the clips but its about time someone stop telling THAT Captain Pugwash story.

What website Natalie? And how did you find it? C4 made no attempts to publicise it.
At least it answered part of my question - and it also explained why so many bands were represented by just one album, often not the ones that most fans would think is the best.

On cable channels you get compilations that are even worse. Americas 20 Sexiest Bright Young Things etc. Taken direct from US with a British voiceover then American Z-list celebs being sarcastic about some soap star's personal life.

Unfortunately we're only halfway to the bottom of the barrel and it'll get worse before it gets better.

100 Greatest Musicals is the next one!
