I found this:

"Do I have to serve?

Yes. The Criminal Justice Act 2003 contained provision to ensure that nearly all members of society are eligible for jury service. If you have been summoned for jury service and had that summons confirmed, then you are under a legal obligation to participate in the criminal justice process as a juror."

You can ask to be excused or for your jury duty to be deferred but you are supposed to give notice and it has to be a good excuse. I don't think starting a new job counts, you should have told your new employer you had been called for Jury Service. Not sure what they will do about it.
Explain to your new employer you have been chosen as a juror ( this says to them you are of good character ), when you go to the court have a quite word with the person who inducts you , tell them its difficult and your circumstances and they will make it happen for you and get you excused especially if it is over subscribed with potential jurors. I have Been called twice , it is exciting pomp and ceramony . loads of waiting about very interesting in parts and I was proud to be part of it , you will enjoy it .
