If my son goes fishing (he's 19) his friend has told him he neednt worry about a licence as it is quite possible and in order to purchase one from the inspector that would come round to check that he has one. i dont think this can possibly be true as if people were not checked out they would be fishing without one? Sorry that seems a like a lot of waffle now i read it back! hope someone can help with the answer. thank you.

If he wants to go fishing he will have to get a licence. If a water bailiff catches him fishing he risks a fine. Some waters are run by local fishing clubs or other agencies so a day ticket from them may also be necessary.

thanks, just as i thought. maybe you could answer another thing for me.....he has also been told that if only fishing in a friends private lake he doesnt need a rod licence??
If the friend owns the land, owns the lake and stocks the lake with fish then I would assume that a licence would not be required in these circumstances
Anyone aged 12 years or over who fishes for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England and Wales is required by law to have an Environment Agency Rod Fishing Licence. Rod licences differ from permits (often referred to as tickets or day tickets) which give permission to fish a particular water or waters and are issued by fishery owners.

That is quoted on the Environment Agency website. My reading of that is that you need a licence- even if you are fishing in your own pond in your own back garden.

And you cant buy licences from the inspector!! Get them from the post office or on-line
I agree with burnhal
A rod licence is for the rod and not for the river
It is a criminal offence not to have one and you will get a criminal record and a fine up to 2,500....
