If I step outside my house into the back garden, and I'm facing the bottom of my garden who own the the fence on my left, me or my neighbour

I own the left and the right, my right sided neighbour owns his right as a party with his neighbour.

There is no hard and fast rules.

Look at your deeds as Ethel has said.

You can tell who owns them by looking at the boundary drawing ,and if you own it there should be a 'v' with the point touching the boundary( on your side)

If your neighbour owns it, the 'v' will be on their side of the plan.

Usually a T - they are called T markings.

If it's yours the top of the T will be on your land and if it is a party it will look like a H - to T's touching, connecting at the boundary.
