This nonsense was going on more than 50 years ago when I attended a bog-standard secondary modern.

Don’t teachers have something more useful to do with their time – such as teaching?

I had to wear navy knickers at my boarding school. And we had to wear a liberty bodice, white not navy. Everyone else wore them so didn't bother me.
Question Author
On one occasion, I was sent home from school for wearing the wrong shade of socks.

On arrival at home and informing my mother of this – I could tell by the expression on her face that she was not sure whether I was telling the truth, or had made up some nonsense excuse for bunking off school.
We used to push it, mid-light grey trousers instead of dark grey, cream shirts instead of white, the fancier the buttons the better, wearing the thin side of the tie out instead of the 'kipper' but the best way to show off was with the shoes, had to be black but Kickers, Rockport and Timberland were the order of the day, and as long as you had worn shoes for a decent amount of time you could get away with the odd trainer day - Nike Air Max or Reebok Pumps were top billing - and you'd have to say you'd damaged your shoes last night and your mum was buying some more today.. Then just turn up in the same ones you had on the day before the ruse - they never checked.

As you will all appreciate, me wearing the correct shade of socks was far more important than my education at the bog-standard secondary modern that I attended.

In an earlier post within this thread, TTT wrote //But that involves doing something constructive and getting off their backsides instead of whining into cyber space and I can guarantee that this kind of parent really can't be bothered.//

Once I get my time machine working, I’m not going to go back and waste my time trying to change the rules at my old school. I’m pretty sure that the teachers just made up the rules as they went along. I doubt very much that they went to the school’s governors and said ‘We’ve just made up this nonsense rule, and need your approval for it.’
Children ought to know that rules are sensible, not someone's arbitrary whim. School uniform doesn't achieve that.
When I started school 69 years ago, all the girls wore navy knickers. That was what we wore for gym and never thought anything about it.
I've worn uniform at schools, and in several jobs. It is so much easier in the mornings. No decision to make.

It's a great leveller at school, so that less well off children look the same as those from wealthy families.

Life is full of regulations that have to be followed. Learning this at a young age is very wise and useful.

As threatened, here is one of the many stupid rules of my old school for Hopkirk (and others) to defend; on a cold winter’s day (or any other day for that matter) whilst walking to school, pupils were not allowed to put their hands in their pockets (to keep them warm).

Answers on a postcard as to the reason for the above rule.
Should have worn gloves
Uniforms were the one reason I chose to leave school at 16 and not do A levels. I did well at school but hated a lot about it. Instead I finished up in a college getting decent qualifications equivalent to A levels, but much more useful. And or course no uniform. I never did have a team spirit either. School days were far from being the best .

days of my life. My son takes after me!

Hopkirk – were you a teacher (making up nonsense rules) at my old school?
One of the most common topics for Controlled Assessment in GCSE language exams from 2012 to 2017 was school. Of the countless many I marked or re-marked post-results I would say that about 60 to 65% of candidates were in favour of school uniform. Some made very good cases for uniform even when they would have preferred a more relaxed version in terms of tie-wearing etc.
I'm with Douglas on this. Working in schools for 9 years gave me a good insight into teachers!
If today's funeral had been in winter, we should have let the soldiers and police put their hands in their pockets to keep warm.
Even when I was at school 6th formers didn't wear uniform.
Schools should crack down on uniform policy, there is nothing wrong with instilling discipline, unless we are self-employed we have to abide by the company rules as adults.
Question Author
But do those company rules forbid you to put your hands in your pockets as you walk to work?
It was easier for the bus drivers to sort out any unruly kids when they wore school uniforms. The head masters would get a phone call the following day.

I recall a neighbour of my old school having cause to complain about the behaviour of a pupil at the school – the complainant reported the pupil’s name as ‘Robin Hood’.
