I want to find out the value of an estate and who inherited it, dating back more than 50 years ago. The person who left the estate died intestate. Further information, such as where to get the forms from, how much they cost, how long it takes etc would be gratefully appreciated.

If there was no will finding out who received the estate can be very difficult - you probably need a genealogy site to try and trace relatives if they are unknown to you, and work it out using the intestacy rules. If there were no relatives the estate went to the Crown

Getting a copy of the probate grant (ie Letters of Administration) is simple enough - that will give the value of the estate, and may give some clues if it tells you who took them out. Start here: http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc/pdfs/proba te_records_from_1858.pdf
