I think the What 3 words app is brilliant. However I do wonder how it is paid for. I even see TV adverts for it occasionally, which aren't cheap.

Cannot see the point off this. If you are lost in an unknown area, it seems like you got to find out the what 3 words of that area before proceeding.
Unless i've got that wrong, you've already got the street name & your satnav.
Unless you’re stranded on a sand bank Sharon or fall over on a countryside dog walk and no way of explaining where you are.
It's orienteering for Dummies
I don't have a dog, what can I do? :-)

If you have broken down on a country road that you don't know, you might be unable to tell the breakdown services how to find you without it.
I think what three words is brilliant

before - - - leddy with two kids broke down on the road. Turn left at the junction where Halford Leigh comes out on the Yeovil rd a mile outside Melbury. EVERYONE knows it....

she dictated into the AA man no mobile it was that long ago--- who was in Delhi. Who didnt have a map ( of Darzet ) in Delhi.

Does she leave the kids in the car, ( safe in Darrrrrzet arrrh) but she didnt know that - and come with us - eek!
or we go on, and leave her, and she takes the chance ( eek!)

and now with three words....

Our house is very hard to find, even using a satnav.
I have put a note in our kitchen of the What3words address. If any family member needs to call an ambulance or other emergency service, they all know to give that address.
If you haven't got the App, your 3 words are UP *** CREEK
In remote areas one postcode can cover a very large area. WTW could be a lifesaver, literally
It's an inspired idea, especially given the lack of people of the calibre of Canary with a finely-tuned navigational skill set.

Cheers Hopkirk. :-)
I agree Doug, I thought it brilliant when I first came across it.
sharon, people have actually been rescued in the middle of no where using W3W.
Take a compass and a map. It's really not difficult.

What about those in need of rescue on water?
Never seen a kayaker with a map of an ocean tbh.
Anything that can save the searchers / rescuers time has to be a good thing.
Take your point Fatti, but surely this is an app that requires a signal for internet connection so the same applies for a phone and water - not a good mix.

And surely if the internet works a GPS app will also tell you pretty much where you are these days?

Again, if the phone works Search teams can track it.
But 999 responders are telling callers to download W3W on to their phones so they can be located more quickly
"One example is when a group of hikers got lost in a forest and England. The hikers called the emergency number and the responder told them to download the what3words app on their cell phone and let them know their precise location. The hikers reported the three-word address for their current location was "kicked.converged.soccer," and the rescue team was able to pinpoint their exact location within minutes."
