the pattern says 'starting with a knit row, work 14 rows in st st'. Does that mean 1 row of st st = '1 row knit,1 row purl',ie, 28 rows in total, or is it knit row, purl row, ie, 14 rows in total... ??? ny thanks...

Thanks for that... I thought so, but I've gone wrong with my poor knitted Clanger so many times already I just wanted to double check... Rightio... must press on.... :-)

always thought st. st was one row plain, one row purl.

urgh, haven't knitted for a couple of years now :-(

total rows will be one knit, one purl = 14 in total.

please don't go with k2tog etc, that'd fry my brain tonight :-)
