turn it off....assume it's empty, sounds as if it has been running too aggressively and, as such, has added, not inconsiderably, to your 'tricity bill.
i use hairdryer have done for years keep it about 3 foot away from freezer does the trick for me
Hairdryer and keep refilling a bowl with boiling water. This will help to loosen the ice.
Turn it off and de-ice thoroughly.

Before you use it again, make sure the seal is good - a leaky seal will cause extra ice, the temperature drops and the freezer over-compensates by making more ice.
A bowl of boiling water underneath frees it up fast enough without danger of damage from blunt instruments.

The freezer is full of food not a good idea emptying it all out. Would any salt work?
put the food in a good quality icebox, such as Camping Gaz's - if the food is packed in one of those, it can last way over 24 hours.

or Coleman (who now own Camping Gaz's parent co).
Put it in cool boxes with some of those blue freezer blocks. Wait until there is a minimal amount of food in there anyway. Planning is key to winning.
We use a palette knife for removing the thick ice from around the top of our chest freezer - casseroles of boiling water for a few minutes, then push the palette knife blade under the ice and crack it off. It only takes us about an hour to defrost ours (the sort of time it might take you to get frozen food from the freezer shop to home), so putting the contents into cold bags keeps them frozen for long enough to get the job done.
Hair Drier and rolling pin, I have to do it regularly as OH does understand shutting the door properly.
