It has come to our attention that we need a lighter duvet for the warmer weather, however, despite having lived away from home for 8 years I have never had to buy one before and know nothing about them!  Can someone explain to me what the 'tog' system means, ie what would constitute a 'summer' tog, and what would I reasonably expect to pay for a decent duvet (NOT a feather one as I'm allergic)?  Thanks!

Here is a site selling duvets.  It suggests 4.5 Tog for summer, 9 for spring and autumn and both of them snapped together for winter.  It also gives prices which you could use as a ball park figure when you look round your local shops.  Ikea could be a good source for a quality duvet.

Thanks Steve, I have just had a look at that site and was horrified by the prices, I had no idea I was looking at in excess of a hundred pounds.  can anyone else say if that's reasonable or if I could get away with paying less?
http://www.sleepingsolutions.co.uk/     may be of some help.
you can get them in bhs for under 50 quid for a kingsize

I wasn't suggesting that you buy one from that site as they are rather expensive.  However, the prices shown are for the two quilts - one 4.5 Tog and the other 9.  As with most things, I suppose you get what you pay for.

I had a look in the Ikea catalogue and, for some reason, they only seem to list single ones!  I looked on their website and, if you click on a product name after having done a search for "quilt", they do list different sizes.

Our winter duvets are 10.5 tog & our summer ones are 4.5 tog. Hope that helps nicola.
on the littlewoods site, they sell them for about 40 quid for a kingsize  (a summer_autumn one)
