You really don't need to tell me just how big of an idiot I am. I know.
I went away for the weekend and left a candle burning (I know).
I've come home to a flat full of smoke and a lovely charcoal shelf on my bookcase. I have a black wall and ceiling and I am very VERY lucky.
How do I get rid of the acrid smell. Can I or will everything soft have to go?
Thanks. I'm an idiot.

Really sorry to hear that Mojo. I don't have the answer, but hope you can get it cleared up. Good luck.

Thanks Tenrec. I had a go at washing the ceiling but it now looks much worse. Gonna have to get the paint out I think. Damn I'm a tw*t!
Think it will be very hard to get rid of the acrid smell, redecoration called for. Can you wash cushions, curtains etc? Hard lesson to learn, but reckon you've been very lucky. Time to roll the sleeves up!
Sugar soap, on your paint work.
Question Author
Yeah maggiebee, I think you're right. I can wash some of my cushions, but not all. I have only lived here for just over a year and I decorated throughout. I really can't afford to do it all again and I certainly can't afford a new carpet.
Wash the walls in sugar soap.

Mojo, if it makes you feel any better..when I was first married we went out to the laundrette for about two hours leaving a few eggs hard boiling. You can only imagine the mess when they exploded all over the kitchen, ruining one of our brand new pans which never recovered. My friend's son put sausages under the grill and then went out...that was serious as it nearly burnt down her kitchen. You were very lucky indeed. May I suggest you put your candles in a container (or at least on a saucer,) in future.

I'm afraid insurance is another thing I can't afford. A rug doctor might be worth a go though. Thanks for the suggestion.
Question Author
All non-container candles have now been removed. :)

OK, I've sprayed everything soft in tropical febreze (smells quite nice actually) for now. I'm going to fix the shelf by gluing leather placemats to it and tomorrow I go on a sugar soap hunt. Thanks for all your kind words. I'll try not to be so stupid in future.
i get sugar soap from wilkinsons, v cheap!
You will find Sugar Soap at any DIY decorating shop.

Would it help if we all told you that you were an idiot; or do you already know that?

Let that be a lesson to all of you ABers. Do NOT leave burning candles unattended ever.

Mojo. An idiot would leave a candle burning on purpose. A normal person makes mistakes.
