Daffodils

A lot of my daffs, which are not yet out, are falling over, as if they are top-heavy, some are even laying on the ground. Any ideas why this might be?

Sounds like the bulbs are too near the surface, they should be planted several inches down. Also if you've had frost, that affects the stalks on many flowers - all I can suggest is that you put in a tiny cane and string them up, if they don't bounce back.

Thanks, I did make a point of planting them as deep as possible because I have had trouble in the past with them not flowering, and thought that was due to being planted too shallowly.

might you have moles who have burrowed and pushed them out of the soil, alternatively of you have wet conditions in sandy or gritty soil then frost heave (water expansion when it freezes) can lift bulbs and newly planted items out.

No moles that I know of. Will have to stake them, I guess.

cats or pigeons pushing through the gaps....use twiggy sticks around the clumps as it looks more natural and if the twigs are prickly it deters the culprits from doing more damage

I had this problem a few years ago and realised when the daffodil opened there was a grub inside, heavy enough to topple the flower over!

We had a very harsh frost yesterday and many of ours suffered in the same way. Most of them seem fine today, just a few of the very early ones are still lying down.
