Pruning a fig tree

Is it too late in the year to prune my fig tree which is very straggly? There are a lot of figs left on it, but very few are ripening now (I just had two for my pudding!), and it does look a mess.
It is facing west/south west, and is quite sheltered.
I'm itching to tidy it up, but don't want to damage it, as it has produced a lot of delicious figs this year - it's a Brown Turkey.

All I know about figs is they bleed a lot when pruned so have some tape handy to seal the cut ends
