I have recently been watching some episodes of the above series again ( very emotive and thought provoking - narrated brilliantly by Sir Laurence Olivier - do you agree ? ) Any way what has struck me is the bravery of the cameramen - who were watching their backs , while they were operating the cameras ? And , who were they - were they army / navy / air force personnel ?

I agree it's a brilliant series. Some of it is newsreel footage from organisations like Pathe, but the armed forces also had their own film units. This link provides some info about the formation of the British Army Film unit.
