General Belgrano...I think
SS Uganda.
HMS Hecla, Herald and Hydra
Bobbi - The Belgrano was the Argentinian ship - torpedoed and sunk 2 May 1982.
Uganda. Belgrano was Argie and sunk by an HM Submarine for entering the Total Delusion Zone.
I think Canberra was also utilised as a troop/ hospital ship as well.
Question Author
thanks, it was Uganda. I couldn't think of the name of the ship my friend served on
HMS Hecla, Herald and Hydra were also hospital ships.
Question Author
yes but it was Uganda I was trying to remember. thanks all
I remembered woof as I went off to do something, I thought, Hang on , the Begrano was sunk....
yes, also on the wrong side
Ha! Not doing too well then huh?
Oh dear.
Uh oh, he comes my ‘mate’
Could have been the SS Corbyn or maybe the SS Cummings :0))))
Was it not SS Sir Galahad? Or was that the troop carrier that was hit?
The three Hecla-class survey ships HMS Hecla, Herald and Hydra were converted to ambulance ships in service to SS Uganda. Although Hydra had been refitted to a spec similar to Uganda she settled into a role similar to her sister vessels, casualty evacuation transport from SS Uganda to Montevideo for onward flight to UK.

When the conflict ended Hydra remained as the Falkland Islands Hospital Ship until Port Stanley airport runway was repaired, thus ensuring she was the last Task Force vessel to return to the UK.
//Was it not SS Sir Galahad? Or was that the troop carrier that was hit?//.
No. It was RFA Sir Galahad. It was bombed whilst full of Welsh Guards who were not disembarked quick enough.
Surg commdr Rick Jolly was in charge of the land based hospital and wrote a book
Red and Green life machine
which is worfa read

used to lecture us on War Surgery which was useful for the IRA bombing campaign

and asked me - what happened Peter - I started off in your brothers year and ended up in the same training grade as you .....
( well clearly that depended on how much older my brother was)
// It was bombed whilst full of Welsh Guards who were not disembarked quick enough.//

I regret that some of the grunts ( they were called 'baldrics' and the officders 'ruperts' ) were watching a video in the mess when the exocet sttuck.
Unwelcome parallels with Gallipoli were drawn ( Tommies disembarked and made tea on the undercliff whilst the Turls rearmed the heights 1915)
