Does anybody know where this is? It's a watercolour my grandma had and I've always wondered where it was painted.

The more I look at it, the more I think it's Ilfracombe. St Nicholas Chapel on the left, Pip n Jims church on the right, Hillsborough (the big hill in the background) and the cliffs of N Devon beyond.

is it signed as that may help identify the place
The town part looks a bit like Ilfracombe but the foreground doesn`t
Question Author
No, not signed, Mally, that's the whole picture. You can see the pencil sketch lines on the original, which makes me think it's a real place not just a made-up picture. It's at least 75 years old, so not much chance the original artist is still around.

I've always thought the water was a lake, not the sea, but it could be either.
Looks a bit like Abergavenny
My first thought was the Mourne Mountains, any Irish connections?
Question Author
Zacs - I can't see any water near Abergavenny on Google Earth but thanks anyway. I thought the small chapel on the hill might be a giveaway to someone.
Question Author
No Irish connections, Mally. One of my great grandparents lived in Glasgow for a while but he was from the other side of the family ie, maternal grandma owned the picture, paternal great grandfather lived in Scotland.
The chapel definitely looks Welsh.
After taking into account Artist's licence , it is often very difficult to identify such scenes.

As a bit of fun, I shall shortly post another old painting, but where I know the location, which I will reveal later.

The steeple of Pip n Jims has even been painted the same
I think you have it 237, this scene but from a different angle.

This could be Rotterdam or anywhere Liverpool or Rome
Wow Mamya, nice bit of detective work :-)
I think it was painted from an area called the Capstone
(The Capstone is the green hill in the link above)
Yes, deffo ilfracombe. Striped slate roof on the church tower. This is closest modern day view I can find.
