Hi Sandy
question from a sane ABer so one's mind can er range
well ciggies were given out free to troops in the trenches 1914. and when Colmore stopped slave trading, Wills made a fortune on cigs - and endowed the University
6d for 10 or is that too much
but then cancer came
and - - - they started taxing not for revenue - - hur hur hur
but to limit consumption
BUT - in the 1970s the tax take from cigs - was enough to finance the NHS ( £100 bn equiv - altho in 1970 £ it might have been 100 m )
and we all knew that if they stopped smoking,
the alternative - - wd not be taxed as much.
every fule kno that inflation 1970-2000 was 10x - 1000%, explaining why in 1970 you cd live on £5 for a week and now it is fish and chips for one once.
but it has been around 2% a year from 2000
so the question is: what will infflation do, over the next 50 y ?
I have no idea of the answer to that one
[how nice to be able to write a post without the expectation of 1000 fooz what all dat about den]

When I first worked in a pub in 1971 (which, conveniently, is 50 years ago), 20 Embassy No 1 cost 26p.
20 Embassy No 1 Signature Gold now cost £9.25 in Tesco. So that's about 35 times the 1971 price for a similar product. Applying the same multiplier to the current price suggests a possible price in 50 years time of £329.

I think fags will be history and the drug of choice will be something supplied by the government to make us feel all, ''Yeah man, cool, beeyooteefooool, omg, am gonna cry, or laugh or wee or, what was I saying?''
''No you, you said ......... Its all clear now ........ ''
''Its growing bigger, bigger, bigger ..... Its poppin' purples an' I can't get serious your turn your turn ......''

clearly not a stock picker on the LSE as we all know previous performance is no guaranatee of future profts ....
at least two of my family - no three - have come badly unstuck on failing to heed that. Actually my brother lost a lot of moolah on Lonrho as he didnt recognise Timy Rowland as an obvious con man - in fact he was conned by him
