True story.
When I was in my teens, four of us (all with provisional licences) clubbed together and bought a Ford Capri. We set off for France for a summer of grape picking. After a minor altercation in a cafe, we decided we didn't like the French. We drove across Europe....all the way to Turkey. We spent the day in Turkey then had a slow drive home.
It was...apart from being arrested for straying into a country (blowed if I can remember which one - it may have been Romania or Yugoslavia) without the relevant visa
Many, before I passed my test.
First one after, was my Dads Hillman Imp
Everything was fine, until the bl00dy thing caught fire,on the way to a cricket match !
Apart from steering my sister's Ford Popular down the drive in the 1960s, I'd say my first legal drive was about mid1970s when I learned to drive legally. No idea what car though, my first own car was a Nissan Micra bought in 1989. I spent a lot of years with a licence but no car.
Riley Pathfinder, bought for £27 and on my first drive the exhaust dropped off in the middle of Malmesbury, a butcher came out of his shop and gave me a piece of string to tie it back on. The car went on to better things serving me well, and I sold it 3 years later for £25, not bad depreciation really!
First car legally was in 1967 and it was a Hillman Minx (4446DN) which brings back memories of courting victim 1.
First thing I ever drove (illegally) was in 1963 and was a Triumph Tiger Cub, in the grounds of Ampleforth College.
An Austin Mini van (legally) in 1973. Passed my test early in 1974. The van was later converted with side windows and rear seats and did a splendid job on the school run for many years.
