Ok settle an argument if you can please.
Is it possible or even legal for a married woman to open a bank or building society account in her maiden name or even an alias.By the same token could a man do the same thing(not maiden name obviously).

you will find in almost all cases you will have to provide supporting documentation to prove your name and address therefore you would not get away with it as you would not have this proof available

Cheers Im a BusyBee.That makes sense.
you could open one in your maiden name if you still had some form of ID with your maiden name on it
from my recent experience they usually want a combination of bank statements, credit card statements, utility bills, passport, driving licence etc dated within the last 6 months, again you would not be able to provide this.

danchip, thanks for your input. Unfortunately I dont have enough money to open any sort of account :))
No it was just an argument in the pub.
Legally you can do it - you can use any name you want.

But the proof of ID would be the stumbling block in reality
As dzug says, it's legal in this country to use any alias you fancy.

But I doubt you will find many banks willing to do so.
It's certainly possible. You would however first have to obtain the necessary proofs of identity in the different name. It's not illegal to change your name so it could be done. In Scotland there's not even any legal process to it.

I don't hink however that you could use two names at the same time legally could you? If that was the point of the question then I think it isn't legal.

The argument was getting a tad heated, but no,I dont think having two names was the point.Just if it could be done or not.
Many thanks to all.
