i have been advised to try it on my knees, as i have acute pain in both. Did it help at all?
I have had a X ray which has shown up Arthritis which i already knew i had but the pain is off the chart now. I can't take codeine because of side effects, but was told by GP to try the Voltarol and see if it helps.

As an aside, you can go up and down stairs on crutches, you’re taught how to by the physio in hospital.
I also speak from experience.
I have had OA for about 18 months now, when it gets so bad that I can't sleep I visit the doctor who gives me a cortisone injection in the knee. If you find Voltarol does not work you may want to ask the doctor about this.
I had several cortisone injections before a knee realignment op they do help but not for long I also wore a bespoke knee brace for 6 months which took the pressure off the joint but wasn't a cure
" suck it and see".............is that medicine today with tick box diagnosis?

As for frusemide, it is effective in reducing swelling in heart disease, kidney disease, scrotal oedema , menopausal symptoms and other causes of swelling.
This all due to medical science and nothing to do with "suck it and see".
I have tried it emmie and it is expensive and no it didn't work for me.

I buy a £1 tub of like biofreeze in Poundland - it does exactly what it says on the tin - the same as Voltarol. I sometimes put it on my knees and shoulder at night and I think it helps.
I remember a neighbour giving me some kind of gel many years ago - it had chillis in it - unfortunately I can't remember the name but I thought it was great. I;m going to email my neighbour and get the name - however my doctor wouldn't prescribe (needed a prescription) too expensive and gave me some other cr@p. But your doctor may give it to you. I will let you know later what the name is.
"I buy a £1 tub of like biofreeze in Poundland - it does exactly what it says on the tin - the same as Voltarol."

It's the same as Voltarol? Really?
for me personally CBL - it does indeed.
It helps you but it's not "the same as Voltarol" then.
JJ, your neighbour had Capsaicin or similar
Corby, it's not the same at all. Biofreeze has menthol and works by making you more aware of the 'cold' than the pain; Voltarol has full prescription strength painkillers that block the pain.
I think JJ meant the effect was the same?

There are generic ibuprofen gels that are a fraction of the price of Voltarol. I have used them occasionally but TBH I think the massage effect of rubbing it on probably helps more than the medicinal property of the gel.
BARRY, that is the point I am making, the two products are not the same.
I tried the 1 pound gel ftom the pound shop...it didn't work. Whereas Biofreeze did provide relief.
I've also recently tried Flexiseq gel...a drug free pain relief. That also provided relief but is very expensive.

I've not had any dairy for the past week due to a stomach bug. No cream, no cheese etc. Today, my knee is far more comfortable than its been in a long time...less stiff, more flexible, less pain. Almost normal.
I've now got a few articles relating to dairy and joint pain to read. Definitely something to consider.
also with pain as bad as you are describing, i'd use paracetamol too as well as voltarol.
I think that NSAIDs really do depend on the person(aka suck it and see) sqad.
over the years i've tried many, and some seem to work for me (indomethacin, voltarol ibuprofen) and some not (meloxicam, piroxicam, naproxen)
Squad:
A quote from Emmie's post: " . . . was told by GP to try the Voltarol and see if it helps".

That sure sounds like 'suck it and see' medicine to me ;-)
flexiseq didn't work for me - I also got the cortisone injection - the day the doctor put it into my shoulder - I thought he put water in - never even felt the needle nor the effects.

I believe you can get a brilliant cortisone injection in hospital but you have to be referred, don't remember but think it is called the Silver or Golden cortisone - I guess it is the real macoy.
neighbour emailed me there and she couldn't remember the name either but she must have ebayed it and came up with Capsaican but that name doesn't ring a bell with me.
Just try it JJ.
What works for some, doesn't for others.
My husband tried it a couple of times on his back. He said it was rubbish....but, it might work for you :-)
try what Patsy -
